This has been labelled the group of death for this year’ European Champions Cup, with defending champions Saracens, French Top 14 second placed finishers and former two-time runner-up of this tournament (2016 & 2018) Racing 92 and both Ospreys and Munster all battling it out for top spot.
On paper this should be a relatively routine victory for Munster who sit top of Conference B in the Pro 14, while their hosts this weekend sit just above Italian outfit Zebre in sixth place in the other side of the draw, with just one win from their six clashes so far.
The Red Army topped their group in this competition last time out, falling in the semis to eventual winners Sarries (their third consecutive semifinals in this competition) who they will also face in the pool stages this time around, though under very different circumstances.
With the English outfit fighting their own domestic battle having suffered a points deduction, it would be fair to say their attention won’t 100% be on this tournament, so it’s a real opportunity for one of these two or Racing 92 to step up to the mark and claim top spot.
Injury Concerns For Both Teams
Both sides will be missing players, as Allen Clarke’s side will be without an array of World Cup Semi-Finalists, most notably in Alun Wyn-Jones, Owen Watkin and George North, while Gareth Anscombe remains sidelined and it’s likely that Nicky Smith, Adam Beard and Justin Tipuric will still have a few more weeks recovery before returning to the domestic scene.
The visitors have absentees of their own with Joey Carberry out injured and backup stand-off JJ Hanrahan remaining a serious doubt, so we can expect a pair of slightly makeshift XVs.
While we expect the Irish side to prevail in this clash, having done so 28-12 at the back end of last month in Cork, there’s very little value to be had backing them outright as heavy odds-on favourites. Though the winning margin for Johann van Graan’s side looks appealing.

They’ve only ousted the 12 point winning margin on the solitary occasion from their last 14 road trips since December last year, while they haven’t managed to do so in any of their last 10, as their last fixture in Wales was a fairly tight 10 pointer against Cardiff Blues less than two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, the hosts have managed to keep it quite tight on home turf, not losing by more than that margin in any of their last 24 games here in both Europe and the Pro 14 since their 47-6 hammering at the hands of Glasgow in November 2017, so the margin looks good at odds-against.
