Having contested yet another high-scoring encounter against the Oranje in these Euro qualifiers, Germany couldn’t capitalise on their early lead to get the double over their old rivals, as they eventually succumbed to a 4-2 defeat.
That puts them three points behind Northern Ireland in Group C, with Michael O’Neill’s men holding an immaculate record up to this point. However, they’re yet to face either the Netherlands or Die Mannschaft thus far and so you get the feel they’re unlikely to maintain their current winning streak for much longer.
Both Teams To Score
The Irish outfit have won three of their four matches so far by a single strike, having played both Estonia and Belarus home and away, whilst they also overcame Luxembourg 1-0 on Thursday in a friendly international where they fielded a weakened side.
That puts them in superb form, but if we rewind back to the Nations League where they lost all four of their matches in Group B3 against both Bosnia and Austria, it doesn’t look quite so promising. However, it should be noted that they did manage their way onto the scoreboard in each of those home defeats.
Obviously, there is a vast disparity between these two outfits as Germany’s victories over Belarus and Estonia came by two and eight strikes respectively, although the latter was on home turf. The last time they met at Windsor Park came in October 2017 in the World Cup qualifiers where they won 3-1, while the reverse fixture saw them come out on top 2-0.
Germany -1 Handicap
Joachim Low’s charges have now won each of their past seven Euro or World Cup qualifiers on the road since September 2016, as only the Czech Republic and the Netherlands could keep to within a single goal margin.
Meanwhile, the only decent sides Northern Ireland have faced since June last year have been Costa Rica, Bosnia
-Herzegovina and Austria, and given they lost all five games against those sides we don’t give them much hope.
One thing O’Neill’s outfit are capable of is hitting the back of the net though. They’ve done so in all but two of their 20 home matches since September 2015 and so they should be able to strike against a German side that has kept just three clean sheets from their last 10 outings.
Indeed, two of those were win to nil’s at home over a poor-travelling Russian outfit and Estonia, so they look more than capable of leaking the odd goal, especially after Ronald Koeman’s men put four past them a few days ago.
