Recent Form
Arsenal need a quick response to a painful 3-0 derby defeat, with Tottenham absolutely dominating proceedings and rapidly closing the distance between the two sides to just a single point.
The Gunners had however won each of their previous four outings, including victories over Chelsea, Man Utd and West Ham, suggesting they should be able to bounce back from a dismal evening across North London.
Newcastle have seen a massive turnaround since Eddie Howe took charge and have been effectively safe from any relegation concerns for some time now, but they were dismantled 5-0 away at Man City last time out as they continue to flounder against top-six opposition.
That followed on from a far more respectable 1-0 defeat hosting Liverpool, but they’ve now lost seven of eight winless clashes facing such sides, with those seven losses accounting for all but two of their nine league defeats under the former Bournemouth coach to date.
Arsenal To Win
The Magpies will point to the fact that all but one of those defeats to top-six sides under current management came on the road, as they’ve won six of their last seven at St. James’ Park. However, they’ve still lost seven of their last eight hosting the top six and seventh placed West Ham, so Arsenal will fancy their chances of getting back on track.
Mikel Arteta isn’t without any concerns heading into this fixture with a growing injury list to contend with. Thomas Partey and Kieran Tierney were already on the sidelines and now Gabriel Magalhaes is a doubt with a muscle complaint picked up against Tottenham, while Rob Holding’s suspension further limits the Gunners’ defensive options.
Arsenal To Win 2-1
The Magpies haven’t scored too many goals against top-six sides under Howe, drawing a blank in five of eight such matches, but those defensive absentees should offer some encouragement at the sharp end. The Gunners have registered just two clean sheets in 14 games now, winning despite conceding on seven occasions.
Understandably, Arsenal are often involved in tight affairs, with seven of their past 10 victories coming by one-goal margins, with as many as four finishing 2-1. Newcastle’s matches are similarly close, with eight of their past 11 outings seeing one team or the other triumph by a single strike.
