Man City were held to a surprise 1-1 draw at home to Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday evening, having failed to build on their success over Chelsea at the weekend.
Newcastle themselves put on a lacklustre display when they visited Villa Park on Monday, despite the chance to break into the top half of the table, and they’ll be hard pushed to get back on track when they host the champions in Saturday’s early kick off.
Indeed, the Magpies are just W1-D1-L6 in head-to-heads with Man City since the beginning of 2014/15, though they did famously run out 2-1 winners in this fixture last season. Steve Bruce himself has quite a dire record when facing the Citizens, winning just four of his 23 matches against them.
However, it should be noted that the Toon Army have had an incredibly respectable record at St James’ Park this season, going unbeaten since the opening day here having been defeated 1-0 by the Gunners.
They’ve subsequently beaten both Man Utd and Bournemouth, held a dangerous Wolves side to a 1-1 draw, while also taking Leicester to penalties in the League Cup, so this won’t be easy pickings for the visitors.
Notably, only nine goals have been scored across their six league outings at this ground, a third of which came in the most recent clash against the Cherries, so a low-scoring affair is not out of the question.
That being said, former trends tend to be thrown out the window when City come to town as Pep Guardiola’s men are by far and away the league’s top scorers, netting six times more than next best, Leicester, so we’ll avoid the goal markets here.
Newcastle +2 Handicap
Interestingly, the handicap market offers up some value. While Bruce’s men have been below par on their travels, losing five of their seven outings and four by more than a single strike, their home form is very respectable.
Their sole defeat to Arsenal came by just the single goal, while they can boast the second-best home defensive record in the league having conceded on just four occasions, so they’re more than capable of restricting their opposition.
What’s more, only once in their last 13 home games against the ‘Big Six’ since October 2017 have they lost by more than that margin, so the +2 handicap definitely appeals at odds-against.
