Both these sides picked up exceptional wins last weekend. Newcastle held on for a 3-2 success away at the Hammers to put four points between themselves and the relegation zone, while the Cherries won for the first time in six matches across all competitions hosting Man Utd.
That latter result burst the bubble of some budding optimism for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team, who had started to string together some victories prior to that loss, but this will be an entirely different sort of challenge for Eddie Howe’s side to contemplate.
The Magpies have only won twice in nine outings in all competitions, although in fairness to Steve Bruce’s men, they’ve only lost away to current top-four outfits Liverpool, Leicester and Chelsea over this spell.
Back at St. James’ Park, they’ve drawn four of five unbeaten games during this time, so they’ll feel confident of their prospects of picking up a useful result.
Newcastle And Bournemouth To Draw
The draw appears a promising shout given the Cherries have had stalemates in three of their past five outings, as the two exceptions finished by narrow 1-0 scorelines either way.
Those three draws were in fact their last three clashes against teams currently occupying a spot in the bottom half of the table, and Bournemouth remain unbeaten versus such teams this season from six attempts.
Moreover, when excluding results against last seasons’ top six and the current top six, Newcastle have lost just once in 11 home matches since late December and have drawn three of four this term.
Under 2.5 Goals
Although the Magpies tucked three past West Ham last time out, they’re not usually so clinical at the sharp end and the rush of goals had more to do with the Hammers’ inability to defend set pieces.
Prior to that, Newcastle had failed to score more than once in all of their other 11 matches this season across all competitions.
As a consequence, eight of them saw fewer than three goals in total, and given five of Bournemouth’s last six outings have also featured a maximum of two strikes, with the last four seeing a combined total of two, we could envisage this clash failing to ignite.
Newcastle have kept two clean sheets in their last two home games and will only be further strengthened if key centre-back Fabian Schar recovers from injury to start.
Federico Fernandez may consider himself highly unfortunate to lose his place however, seeing as the former Argentina international has deputised well with a goal and an assist from his two starts this season (their last two games).
We don’t see it being a problem for the hosts to go with either of those two, while Bournemouth’s injury list has been easing gradually and, in any case,, they’ve coped without the players who remain sidelined for some time now.
