Recent Form
Rangers may have finally seen their backline breached as Hibernian were able to hold them to a 2-2 draw last weekend, but Steven Gerrard needn’t be overly concerned following a strong run of clean sheets going back into pre-season.
In fact, his team bounced back with a 4-0 triumph over Dutch outfit Willem II away in Europe on Thursday, leaving them an imposing W12-D2-L1 since July when including friendlies against Lyon, Nice, Motherwell themselves and Coventry at the start of that run.
They won to nil in 13 of the 15 matches, as one of the exceptions saw them downed 1-0 away at Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League knockout stages.
Whereas the Gers instantly rediscovered their defensive instincts, Motherwell had their own trip on Thursday, though things didn’t go so well for them as they were pumped 3-0 by Israeli outfit Hapoel Be’er Sheva.
In mitigation, Stephen Robinson’s side did have to cope with 10 men for the final 20 minutes and had chances of their own, but it’s worth noting they were already 1-0 down at the point of Declan Gallagher’s dismissal.
Rangers To Win To Nil
Motherwell had appeared to have turned a corner following back-to-back league wins over St. Johnstone (1-0) and more impressively against an in-form Aberdeen (3-0).
However, they did benefit from the absence of key centre-back Scott McKenna versus the latter, as the Dons produced a catalogue of defensive errors with goalkeeper Joe Lewis and centre-back Ash Taylor particularly culpable.
Motherwell had previously tasted victory just once in 14 appearances dating back into January (W1-D5-L8), so we’re unconvinced they’ve truly resolved their issues.
Half Time/Full Time – Rangers/Rangers
Even on home turf, Motherwell have won just twice in 10 matches now, including 2-0 and 4-0 defeats to Rangers and Celtic respectively as they trailed at half-time in both of those clashes.
In fact, they’ve been behind at the break in all but one of their past 12 competitive encounters with the Old Firm duo, with their opponents leading at both half-time and full-time in eight of the last nine.
Rangers To Win 2-0
Motherwell have now shipped 39 goals in 12 matches against Scotland’s dominant duo since 2018/19, as they only conceded fewer than twice on the single occasion.
Given Rangers have scored at least two goals in eight of their last nine outings in all competitions, including 15 across the past four, they shouldn’t lack the firepower to down their hosts.
However, the Gers’ past two road trips have been in Europa League qualifiers, while in the Premiership alone they’ve failed to score more than twice in any of their last nine on their travels, leaving the correct score as an interesting option.
