Matchday 19: Premier League Betting Preview

This weekend marks the last round of Premier League fixtures ahead of Christmas, with Pep Guardiola’s City side perched comfortably on the top of the Christmas tree.

Aside from City, there are a whole host of six pointers in store, as Arsenal face Liverpool and Burnley host Spurs in the hunt for Champions League football next season. At the other end of the table, six of the bottom seven sides do battle, separated by just five points.

For Arsenal, who have been somewhat stumbling along of late, they’ll be keen to give manager Arsene Wenger an early Christmas present by leapfrogging Liverpool to go fourth at Christmas. Between the two sides, they had a whopping 44 shots combined in their respective previous league games, so expect the chances to come thick and fast.

If anyone’s going to convert them, we’re backing Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah. The league’s top scorer bagged another goal in a 4-0 rout of Bournemouth to bring his tally up to 14 last weekend, and comes in at Premier League betting odds of 6/5 to score anytime.

Tottenham will be licking their wounds after a stinging 4-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City, but they’ll need to be on top form to beat a resolute Burnley side who have conceded more than one goal just twice in the league this season. One of those occasions came against last year’s Champions Chelsea, and the other against City – they’re enjoying a truly stellar campaign.

With a record like that, we think Premier League betting odds of evens for Spurs to score under 1.5 goals are certainly worth a punt.

For the league’s other claret and blue outfit, West Ham, they’ll be keen to build on a huge away win at Stoke against Newcastle, but will have to do so without key man Manuel Lanzini.

The Argentine, who has most often been the provider for West Ham this season has big boots to fill, but Marko Arnautovic could be just the man to fill them for the Hammers. As well as bagging himself a goal against former club Stoke, he hit the woodwork twice and has been an important man in a rejuvenated West Ham side under David Moyes. Newcastle will be seeking their first Premier League win since October 21st.

Crystal Palace are another of the league’s relegation candidates who come into their game against bottom club Swansea buoyed by a significantly improved record under new manager Roy Hodgson. Swansea will smell danger, with only one win since October 14th. Palace on the other hand, are enjoying their best run in the English top flight since going 12 games unbeaten way back in 1990.

Rounding out the huge clashes at the bottom, a Stoke side that have conceded more goals than any other team in the league this season, come up against a West Brom side also in all kinds of trouble. Incoming Baggies manager Alan Pardew will be hoping he can become the latest new manager to achieve a reversal of fortunes for his side.

After a promising point against Liverpool at Anfield and a narrow defeat at the hands of Manchester United, the Baggies will be desperate to end a club record 17 game streak without a win. At Premier League odds of 12/5 to do so, we think they could get the job done as Stoke seek just their second clean sheet in 17. The Potters have now lost five of their last six league games.
