Man United’s reign at the top of the table was relatively short lived as they’ve picked up just the single point from their last two outings against Sheffield United and Arsenal to leave them three points adrift of their city rivals.
This is the first of three tough matches for Man United against sides that have proven they can mix it with the best this year, with the Toffees and the Hammers following on from this clash.
Southampton could consider themselves fairly unlucky to have come away empty-handed from their weekend clash with Aston Villa as they found themselves on the wrong end of two controversial VAR decisions, though they’ll have to dust themselves off here and put in the kind of performance that we know they’re capable of.
Unfortunately, those performances have been few and far between of late as they’ve won just one of their last eight matches and currently sit in the bottom half of the table.
Saints fans will excuse that form considering seven of those games have come against current top-half opposition, while they also remain in the FA Cup, though it’s not as though the opposition weakens here as they travel to Old Trafford.
In truth, the Red Devils have been far better on the road than they have at home this season with 65.9% of their points so far being pickup up on their travels.
That is the highest percentage from any side in the league following Brighton’s first home win of the season against Spurs, as they’d sit down in 11th in a table based exclusively on home results.

We can’t ignore the fact that they’ve now only lost one of their last 15 matches in the league though, and Southampton haven’t shown enough of late that they can topple their opponents here, though we’d fully expect this to be a tight encounter.
Indeed, only one of the Saints’ nine away games this season have been settled by more than a single strike and even that result came via a 95th-minute counterattack from Leicester.
Meanwhile, Man United haven’t won by more than a single strike since before Christmas, and we can’t see them putting their visitors to the sword considering, so the handicap looks the best bet for this matchup.
Half with most goals: First Half
Southampton are very much a first-half team as they tend to struggle for output after the break having not managed a single second-half goal since the 13th of December.
That’s not to say they crumble after the interval though, having conceded just three second-half goals in total since they last played United in November.
