BOOSTED ODDS FOR THE EUROPA LEAGUE!
Recent Form
A rough patch for Roma has seen their chances of European football diminished after a run of two defeats from three winless matches domestically. They now sit seventh, six points off Lazio in the final European spot, although to make matters worse, the men from Naples also have a game in hand. Their best chance of European football for next season therefore, is winning the Europa League.
Man Utd, on the other hand, have pretty much secured a Champions League spot for next season through the Premier League, sitting 12 points clear of fifth placed West Ham.
They’ve won five of their last six unbeaten outings, conceding just three times over that period. In fact, their defensive record has been impeccable dating back to early January, keeping a clean sheet in 16 of their last 27 outings in all tournaments.
Since dropping down to Europe’s second tier competition, they’ve conceded just once from their six knockout matches as that came in stoppage time against AC Milan.
The one thing that is going against the Red Devils is their record in semi-finals under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
They’ve failed to advance from their last four attempts at this penultimate stage in all competitions since he arrived at the club, although it should be noted that three of the previous four teams have gone onto lift the trophy.
Man United To Win To Nil
In order to gauge where this out of touch Roma side are at the minute, the best metric looks to be in their form against the best opposition over in Italy. They’ve lost six of their 10 winless outings against the six teams above them in the league this term, and all the last four of those trips by an aggregate scoreline of 13-1.
Paulo Fonseca’s men have been rather fortunate on their run to this semi-final, with Ajax being by far the best team they’ve faced to get to this point and up against this Man Utd side without Gianluca Mancini, it could be a difficult evening.
Furthermore, Italian teams when visiting England haven’t had the best of success in Europe since the start of the 2010/11 campaign.
They’ve won just six of their 33 European encounters with English sides, as half of those victories were Juventus, and we somewhat doubt that Roma are going to be turning that record around.
