As an opponent this season, Manchester City have been absolutely unstoppable, grinding out win after win week in week out to achieve a current win streak in the Premier League of a record 16 wins.
With the latest of these a 4-1 demolition of Spurs, their only slip up came way back on August 21st, when they were held to a 1-1 draw by the Toffees.
That being said, after bettering the records of Arsenal’s best in the Invincibles era (14-game win streak) and last season?s Chelsea supremos (13-game win streak), they are homing in on a new European record.
The current record for consecutive wins across all of Europe’s top leagues stands at a whopping 19 and came to an end in March of 2014. City will, however, have experience on their side, as none other than manager, Pep Guardiola was at the helm at Bayern at the time.
At their current tally, they hold good company, with Spain’s powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid also having enjoyed 16 game win streaks over the years, but we don?t see them stopping here.
For a team that has averaged over three goals a game in the league and scored 17 more goals than the next highest scoring team this season, they’ll first face a Bournemouth side with no win in their last six Premier League games on Saturday.
With a third of the league’s top nine scorers at their disposal, we see the Cherries being despatched with ease in this fixture at Premier League betting odds of 1/9 for a City win.
If they achieve this, they will equal the second best ever win-streak across Europe. Interestingly, this is held by an Inter Milan side that was led by Roberto Mancini, another manager that went on to manage City.
City will then face a Newcastle side that has lost every single game since October 21st aside from a draw against fellow league strugglers West Brom. An away day to in-form Crystal Palace will be the next challenge for the Sky Blues. Palace are currently enjoying their best run in the English top flight since going 12 games unbeaten way back in 1990. They could pose the strongest challenge as City chase down the 20 game win streak, but with the interchangeability of City’s Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus we think City have the fire power to manage the busy Christmas period.
With the potentially record-breaking game at home against Watford on January 2nd, they really do look in good shape to achieve the unthinkable, as the Hornets have no wins in their last five including four defeats.
So often the man to deliver City’s killer blows this season, Raheem Sterling could produce the goals in this run of games with two last time out against Spurs and 11 in total in the league. Only Kane and Salah have scored more in the league this season.
Aside from what would be a phenomenal achievement if City can win their next four, if they carry on the season in this fashion some might fancy them to wrap up the league earlier than ever before.
