Manchester City look to capture Premier League title earlier than ever as they host bitter rivals Manchester United, whilst Toffees hope to make it four wins from five in ending worst ever losing streak against the Reds
All eyes will no doubt be on the Etihad this weekend as Manchester City and Pep Guardiola’s Blues look to wrap up the Premier League earlier than ever before. If they are to do so, they’ll need to get over any mid-week hangover after a stinging 3-0 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League. That being said, the added incentive of the chance to sew up the title in front of arch rivals United should, we argue, be more than enough.
Last time the two teams faced each other in December, City had already raced towards a record points haul after 15 games on their way to a new league record win streak. As more records look set to tumble, we think the midfield battle between David Silva and Nemanja Matic could be a key one as Manchester United look to spoil the City party.
Just a stone’s throw away, at Goodison Park, this weekend’s early kick-off on Saturday marks another derby, as Everton will hope to capitalise on the potential absence of Mo Salah and end a rot of sixteen games without a win against the Reds. After Liverpool dismantled Manchester City in mid-week, we expect several changes that could leave this one hanging in the balance.
Manchester City vs Manchester United
Putting City’s subdued performance against Liverpool in mid-week aside, the Premier League leaders are one win away from a record 28 wins in a top-flight season, and it would be hard to bet against them on Saturday. As they look to take home the title six games early, it would only be fitting to look towards David Silva – a man that not only scored against United last time out, but has been their most creative force over the last eight seasons.
With no other player making as many assists (75) or creating as many chances (663) since his arrival in England at the start of the 2010/11 season, we see his creativity holding the key on Saturday. The task of keeping him at bay could fall upon the shoulders of Mr. consistent, Nemanja Matic, as the only United Midfielder to start all 31 of United’s games this season. Still some task however, we see City bouncing back on Saturday to take home all three points at Premier League betting odds of 10/11.
Everton vs Liverpool
If City are to take home all three points on Saturday, Liverpool will certainly be in for a week to a remember if they can also win. By doing so, they would catapult themselves above Manchester United to second in the Premier League table. Despite Mo Salah likely missing out, Everton will no doubt struggle to keep the intensity of the likes of Firmino and Mane at bay, but they may however be helped out by the prospect of a weakened side on Saturday.
That prospect would certainly come at an opportune time for Big Sam’s side as they hope to put an end to a streak of 16 games without a win against Liverpool.
With Everton having won three of their last four home matches, Rooney will hope to again bag himself a goal against the Reds after scoring last time out. We fancy them to snatch what some might view as an unlikely win at football betting odds of 3/1, as Klopp’s side have one eye on next Tuesday’s Champions League quarter final second-leg.
One thing is for sure, it looks set to be a scintillating Saturday of football.
