Recent Form
It was a disappointing afternoon for Man Utd as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford by Everton. Indeed, the Red Devils were on a three-game winning run going into that fixture having turned over Spurs and their Manchester rivals in the Premier League, as well as AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.
However, a lack of midfield creativity hurt them on this occasion as it has so many times before in recent times, and on the 4,000th consecutive game where United fielded an academy player in their matchday squad, it was fittingly Mason Greenwood who rescued a point for them from the edge of the area.
Colchester currently sit a world away in ninth place in League Two, but have been spectacular on their route to the quarters of this years’ Carabao Cup.
They’ve beaten the likes of Swindon and Crawley Town, whilst more impressively they’ve overcome Premier League outfits Palace and Spurs on penalties following goalless draws over the 90 minutes.
Of course, both those top-flight sides rotated their line-ups, especially in the case of Spurs, but they still had a handful of first team players in each of those and so we certainly wouldn’t write off the underdogs for this one straight away.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were impressive when weaker Dutch opponents came to town last Thursday, winning 4-0 whilst fielding a rotated side, even if not to the extreme extent as when they visited Astana in Kazakhstan.
Now we’re into the business end of this competition and with silverware a must at some stage for United if Solskjaer is to win over the doubters, we’d expect him to opt for a fairly strong outfit, especially with this game coming at Old Trafford.
Under 2.5 Goals
The U’s may have only won four of their 13 trips across League Two and the Carabao Cup this season, but with their only three defeats coming by one-goal margins, they’ve at least shown they can keep it tight.
In fact, against the teams that are currently above them in League Two, as well opponents in higher divisions, they’re an impressive W3-D4-L3 from 10 outings, conceding just five goals across them, as eight saw two strikes or fewer.
Man Utd have seen fewer than three goals in four of their five matches at Old Trafford in the FA Cup and League Cup combined since the start of 2018, including both in 2019, and at a huge price we fancy having half a point on the ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ market coming in.
