Recent Form

The marquee clash of the weekend throws up an intriguing encounter between ‘Big Six’ rivals Man Utd and Arsenal on Monday night. Both had rather contrasting midweek fixtures as the Gunners ran out 5-0 winners against an in-form Forest side in a game which saw the much-welcomed return of attacking fullbacks Hector Bellerin and Keiran Tierney.

United on the other hand played out an evenly fought 1-1 draw at home to League One Rochdale, and only managed to progress on penalties despite fielding a side including the likes of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, while Juan Mata and Daniel James also made appearances from the bench, so there were really no excuses.

Both Managers Feeling The Pressure

Both managers have come under pressure in recent weeks as performances haven’t been up to scratch. Indeed, the Red Devils are W2-D2-L2 in all competitions recently, while both victories came at Old Trafford by exactly one goal to nil against Leicester and Astana and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be desperate to claim a scalp on Monday to ease some nerves, though a victory for him would only add pressure on Unai Emery.

Going back as far as this fixture in December last year, the Arsenal boss has gone W4-D4-L8 on the road, with those four victories coming against Newcastle, Huddersfield, Watford and Burnley, none of whom are of United’s calibre, so its hard to envisage an Arsenal win here.

Indeed, when going up against the ‘Big Six’, they’ve lost a miserly 15 of their 22 winless trips since they beat City in 2014/15, although they did score as well as their opposition in 17 of them so it could well still be an entertaining affair.

By contrast, the hosts are a much more respectable W7-D5-L4 from their 16 such games at Old Trafford since the start of 2016/17, with both sides netting in nine, while their Manchester rivals recorded three of those four defeats and Spurs the other.

Manchester United To Win

Solskjaer understands the importance of this fixture having played in 19 fiery encounters against the Gunners during his playing days, and will no doubt rally his troops to go out and take it to the North Londoners.

In fact, the Red Devils have edged their rivals in recent years with a W3-D1-L1 record against them in all competitions since 2017/18 and they’ll be looking to add to that, even if both sides netted on four occasions.

In fact, no team has been more successful on a Monday night than United in Premier League history, as they’ve won a staggering 43 of their 64 such fixtures, losing only six of them. Arsenal meanwhile, have lost six of their last 22 games on Monday evenings, including four of their last nine on the road and they look worth taking on as a result.

Both Teams To Score

Emery’s men have seen both sides plunder goals in each of their last five outings, while they conceded a minimum of two strikes in each of their last four of those too.

Man Utd have also been struggling to get their centre back pairing firing with them keeping just one clean sheet from their last five encounters and we’d be very surprised to not see a goal registered at some point on both sides.

With Marcus Rashford likely to miss this clash having suffered a groin injury against West Ham, and Anthony Martial lacking match fitness, it seems entirely plausible that young Mancunian Mason Greenwood may lead the line at Old Trafford having taken his opportunity by scoring midweek.

The youngster will be relishing the chance to take on such a responsibility and looks an astute replacement to take on this fragile Gunners defence.

Both Teams To Score Yes At 1/2

Manchester United To Win At 13/10
