Recent Form

After a damaging loss at Anfield that sees them nine points adrift of the league leaders now, City can ill afford dropping further points at this moment in time. They actually trail their opponents here by one point, while it’s not the ideal time to be playing Chelsea with the visitors having won six league games on the bounce.

Although the feel-good factor at the London club under Frank Lampard is in stark contrast to the antagonistic mood last term with Maurizio Sarri, it should be noted that their recent winning streak hasn’t seen them tested by top level opposition, as the highest-placed team they faced was Burnley in 10th.

They’ve been held at home to draws with Sheffield United and Leicester this term, lost to both Liverpool and Man Utd, with the latter not only inflicting a 4-0 defeat upon them on the opening day but also beating them more recently in the League Cup at Stamford Bridge.

Goal scored in minutes 76-90

Chelsea have actually performed better away from home this season though, as only Liverpool have picked up more points on their travels. They’ve won their last seven road trips across all competitions, with victories at Lille and Ajax in the Champions League particularly encouraging.

Late goals have been a strong feature, with them or their opponents netting eight times from the 77th minute onwards across their last six away matches.

City are no strangers to late goals either, with seven of their past nine league outings witnessing at least one strike in the 76-90 minutes bracket.

Over 3.5 Goals

One thing this game looks set to throw up is goals. Seven of Chelsea’s eight away matches this season have featured at least three, as five of these saw a minimum of four.

Meanwhile, City’s problems in defence continue to haunt them, with key centre-back Aymeric Laporte not due to return until early February and makeshift left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko still sidelined. Goalkeeper Ederson also remains a doubt, with replacement Claudio Bravo failing to convince in his absence.

Eight of City’s 12 league games have seen at least four goals and although only one of the six head-to-head meetings in all competitions since 2017/18 have featured more than two, we wouldn’t expect this game to follow suit.

Those matches all came with either Antonio Conte or Maurizio Sarri at the helm, and Lampard’s approach has been considerably more gung-ho.

Chelsea have scored 18 times in their past five league matches on the road, though failed to keep a clean sheet in any of these and so we’d expect both teams to register on the board.

In fact, across all competitions, Chelsea have scored at least twice in six of their past seven away days, while City have done the same in eight of their past nine at home, and so at odds-against we’re happy to back over 3.5 goals.

Chelsea +1.25 Asian Handicap

City are more vulnerable this term having lost three times already, compared to four for the entirety of last season.

Meanwhile, Chelsea arrive in good form and haven’t lost by more than one goal across all competitions since the opening day debacle at Old Trafford.

That’s a spell spanning 18 matches, where they’ve played Liverpool and Ajax twice each, as well as Leicester, Man Utd, Valencia and Lille, so we like the look of their prospects on the Asian handicap.

Over 3.5 Goals At 21/20

Chelsea +1.25 Asian Handicap At Evs
