It could very well have been back-to-back defeats at Anfield for Liverpool on Tuesday night after Atalanta beat them here last week and Ajax looked in command this week.
However, the Dutch side failed to make their chances pay and a howler from their keeper Andre Onana, gifted Curtis Jones the opening and only goal of the game.
That result secured the Reds top spot of their European group and a place in the last 16 as a result. That’ll be a relief for Jurgen Klopp, who’ll be able to give his main starters a much-needed rest in their final group stage match next week in Denmark, but they’ll have to deal with this well-drilled Wolves outfit in the Premier League first.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s charges looked impressive when beating Arsenal last weekend at the Emirates Stadium, and their new four at the back system looked to work well against an organised Gunners side.
However, they’ll be more concerned about the health of Raul Jimenez after he went off on a stretcher in that encounter, and he looks set to spend a prolonged period on the sidelines. Indeed, without the Mexican in the starting line-up, Wolves have gone just W1-D2-L5 from their eight matches across all competitions since March 2019, failing to score in half.
In fact, six of the total eight goals they scored across those came in the Europa League against weaker opposition Besiktas and Espanyol, while they’ve lost their only such outing this season against Championship side Stoke 1-0 in the League Cup.
Liverpool Multiscore 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1
For all of Liverpool’s injury troubles, they’ve still beaten their visitors in all four league meetings between the two teams since the start of 2018/19, winning one or two nil in three, as the other finished 2-1.
In fact, Klopp’s men have won 30 of their 31 unbeaten outings at this stadium in the league dating back to February 2019, winning to nil in 13.
Interestingly, it took the Reds eight home league games before they got their first clean sheet of the season last term, going on to keep their opposition out in the next five straight matches and we feel we could be seeing a similar trend occurring.
Indeed, they kept their opening Premier League clean sheet here against Leicester a fortnight ago, without any of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez or Trent Alexander-Arnold and kept a talented Ajax out midweek too.
However, we’d be concerned about the absence of Alisson also for this one. Since the Brazilian joined, the Reds have kept clean sheets in 48% of the 75 games he’s started, which reduces to just 18% in the 11 without him, while their winning percentage increases in his absence.
With that in mind, instead of backing the win to nil, we prefer to have a little bit of cover with the multiscore market.
Wolves have been remarkably low scoring in their fixtures dating back to early March, seeing fewer than three goals in 20 of their last 24 matches across all competitions, and now without the goalscoring abilities of Jimenez, we’d be surprised if they started to increase their output.
They’ve netted just six goals from their eight games on the road since July, failing to score in each of their four defeats.
Liverpool Multiscore 1-0, 2-0 Or 2-1 At 7/4
