Liverpool didn’t get a chance to add to their points tally last weekend as their trip to Old Trafford was postponed, but wins for top-four rivals Chelsea, West Ham and Tottenham leaves them hanging by a thread.
Southampton are essentially home and dry with a 10-point lead over 18th-placed Fulham, so only one team faces any real pressure here, but Liverpool have at least had plenty of time to recharge the batteries and work on their finishing.
Jurgen Klopp must continue without centre-back trio Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, as well as influential midfielder Jordan Henderson, though he’ll hope that the Saint’s own absentees will help his cause.
Ralph Hasenhuttl will have to make do without suspended centre-back Jannik Vestergaard following his early bath last time out, injured quartet Danny Ings, Ryan Bertrand, Oriol Romeu and Will Smallbone, while Takumi Minamino is ineligible to face his parent club.
Southampton did well to hold the Foxes to a draw considering Vestergaard’s red card came as early as the 10th minute.
However, they’d lost their previous three outings versus West Brom, Leicester again in the FA Cup and Tottenham, so it’s hard to make the case that they’ve turned the corner.
Liverpool -1 Handicap
In the league alone, the visitors are a desperately poor W2-D2-L12 since mid-January as the two victories came over Sheffield Utd and Burnley, who are two of the five clubs beneath the Saints in the table.
Away from home it’s even worse, as Southampton have lost eight of nine road trips over this period, as the exception came against the rock-bottom Blades.
Liverpool did lose six on the trot at Anfield, but they appear to have gotten over their home struggles and have since gone unbeaten in four there.
That includes encounters with Leipzig and Real Madrid in Europe, as well as bottom-half sides Aston Villa and Newcastle, so should come away with the points on this occasion.
Southampton have lost their past three trips to Anfield by a combined 10-0 scoreline, conceding at least three times on each occasion.
Given the Saint’s dreadful form on their travels, and with key players missing at both ends of the field, we’d expect their hosts to rediscover their shooting boots after a week off and cover the handicap.
