This depleted Liverpool outfit have unsurprisingly had a dip in form. Just one win from their last four outings is nowhere near the standard that they expect of themselves, and they’ll want to get back to winning ways in this one.
Ajax, on the other hand, have won six games on the bounce dating back to the last day of October, scoring 23 goals and conceding just four times.
That record does look slightly flattering considering their two Champions League matches over that period came against Midtjylland, while their domestic matches are considerably easier than what Liverpool come up against. However, you can still only beat what is put in front of you.
Liverpool’s backline has been the most hampered part of their squad with all of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold on the sidelines, and it may take some time for the players filling their spots to gel.
Their absence was certainly felt when drawing with Brighton last time out and especially so when hosting Atalanta at Anfield last week.
Indeed, they lost to that Italian outfit 2-0, which was the first time under Jurgen Klopp that they’d lost by more than a single strike at Anfield, a run of 137 home games, while it was their first defeat over 90 minutes here since September 2018.
Erik ten Hag’s men have done extremely well on the road in Europe’s elite competition since the start of 2018/19 campaign.
Indeed, seven wins from their 13 unbeaten trips to opposition is remarkable, especially considering some of the teams they came up against.
They beat impressive outfits Real Madrid (4-1), Juventus (2-1), Spurs (1-0), Valencia (3-0) and Lille (2-0), whilst they drew at Bayern (1-1), Chelsea (4-4) and Atalanta (2-2).
That’s the sort of form that could really trouble a flagging Liverpool outfit, and it could be a lot closer than most people might first think.

The Reds will know all they need is a stalemate in this one to reach the knockout stages and that certainly brings the draw into play for us.
They’ve finished all-square in half their last four outings and considering how good the Dutch side have been on the road in this tournament in recent seasons, we’d be surprised if this was their first such road defeat.
Furthermore, Klopp’s charges haven’t exactly been blowing teams off the park at this stadium in Europe, with their only such victory they manged by more than a single strike since the start of last season came against Midtjylland, and we’d expect this one to go down to the wire.
