Despite a frustrating season for Jurgen Klopp’s team, Liverpool’s thrashing of United reminded us just how good they are.

Liverpool Thrash United In Historical Seven-Goal Win

Front Three On Fire

Nobody who watched Liverpool’s wretched 3-0 loss to Wolves in January would have predicted that the Reds should now be one of the most in-form teams in the entire league. After a season of false dawn after false dawn, to say Liverpool are ‘back’ would be a jinx as far as their fans are concerned.

Nevertheless, the Reds’ complete and utter humiliation of Manchester United could mark the turning point in their season. Liverpool have now kept five clean sheets in a row and are just mere points away from breaking into the top four for the first time this season.

The front three of Nunez, Gakpo, and Salah toiled with United’s backline and reduced them to rubble after just 10 minutes of second-half action. Luke Shaw produced his worst performance this season, whilst Raphael Varane and Lizandro Martinez looked like a shell of themselves.

Impressive Midfield

Liverpool’s midfield was also very reminiscent of the legendary 2019/20 Liverpool side. Fabinho bossed the defensive side of midfield, whilst Jordan Henderson offered his usual tireless work-rate and intelligent passing. Harvey Elliot had one of his best performances in a Liverpool shirt, running 10.1km in total - the most out of any player in the game.

Elliot and Henderson also registered an assist each.

Liverpool may have been helped by United’s defeatist attitude and Rangick-era disorganization, but all credit must go to Jurgen Klopp’s side, who are now in serious Champions League contention. The Reds never left the top four in 21/22 and this season, they are yet to join it.

The 7-0 downing of their archrivals will give Liverpool plenty of motivation to tackle Real Madrid’s 3-goal advantage in the Champions League. It remains unlikely that the Reds will overcome their deficit in Madrid, but this victory will give their fans all the hope they need.
