This game is massive for the title race and should Liverpool be able to take the spoils, they’ll extend their lead over Man City to a whopping nine points and deliver a major psychological blow to Pep Guardiola’s men.
However, if the result were to go the other way, the gap will be slashed to just three points and momentum could swing entirely in the opposite direction.
There’s certainly no lack of familiarity between these two coaches. Klopp and Guardiola have met 17 times in their careers now, with the manic German W7-D5-L5 across these over 90 minutes.
Of course, his Dortmund side were always underdogs when taking on Bayern, but limit their record against one another to just their current clubs, and it’s Klopp who holds the upper hand having gone W4-D3-L2 as he’s won three of four unbeaten clashes at Anfield.
Liverpool Draw No Bet
Liverpool’s record in front of the Kop has been utterly outstanding. In the league alone, they’re unbeaten there in 45 matches stretching back to April 2017, when former striker Christian Benteke scored a brace for Crystal Palace to down them 2-1.
No one can be in any doubt that the purchase of Virgil van Dijk in January 2018 helped transform them into genuine contenders for the big trophies, and going back just a couple of games before his arrival, the Reds have won an immense 30 of 34 home league matches, including all but one of the last 20.
Klopp has regularly made wholesale changes to domestic cup matches so we wouldn’t pay too much attention to those games.
However, broadening out the Reds’ results to include Champions League fixtures, but restricting the sample to just matches versus the elite sides they’ve encountered, it’s undeniable that Klopp’s outfit have done exceptionally well at Anfield.
Up against the ‘Big Six’ and the best the Champions League has thrown at them (Barcelona, Bayern, Napoli, PSG, Roma, Porto and Sevilla), they haven’t lost any of their 26 home matches since the beginning of 2016/17, winning nine of 10 since October 2018.
Liverpool have only suffered defeat once in their last 28 top-flight matches hosting City and in none of the last 16, and with that historical as well as recent record at Anfield in mind, we’re a little surprised to not see the hosts at a shorter price.
Key Players Fit
Liverpool have all their key players back in the picture following the return from injury of goalkeeper Alisson, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been putting in some great performances recently to bolster their options.
The only real concern for Klopp is the continued absence of centre-back Joel Matip, but City have greater concerns in that department and so the team news must surely favour the hosts.
Guardiola remains without key centre-back Aymeric Laporte, and with legendary captain Vincent Kompany having departed the scene at the end of last season, there’s no experienced specialist in the position to guide either of the erratic pair of John Stones or Nicolas Otamendi through games.
The Man City boss appears to have given up on using the two of them together, with the last time they were partnered at the back ending in that calamitous 3-2 defeat away at Norwich in September.
Although they haven’t always been available at the same time, with Stones spending a number of weeks out injured, at least one or the other has had to make do with a place on the bench in their last six games across all competitions since he returned to fitness.
Klopp has unsurprisingly bemoaned the heavy fixture schedule his side must face over the festive period, owing to their participation in the Club World Cup, but there’s no doubting that this isn’t the time to rest players.
His team will at least on this occasion benefit from the extra day of rest having played on Tuesday hosting KRC Genk, while City had to travel to Italy to face more difficult opponents in the shape of Atalanta on Wednesday.
