Monaco v St Etienne

One of the two teams currently sitting on just three points at the foot of the table is St Etienne. The Saints did well to battle out three hard earnt draws to get their season going, but it has been disappointment for them in their last three outings, failing to pick up a single point.

Their next opponents Monaco did exceptionally well last term to secure a top-three finish for the first time since 2017/18, but they’ve been struggling at the start of this campaign. Just one win from their opening six encounters is well below the standard they set last season, while they also failed to qualify for the Champions League through the playoffs system at the start of this campaign. That means they’ve lost three of their four home games in all tournaments now since mid-August and that could well play against them.

Interestingly, St Etienne have a favourable W4-D1-L1 record in the six meetings since the start of 2018/19 and we reckon they’re going to make life very difficult for the hosts. Dating back to early January, they’ve only lost to Montpellier, Marseille, PSG and Lorient from their 11 trips, and they look a worthy double chance selection this Wednesday.

PREDICTION:

ST ETIENNE OR A DRAW

Metz v PSG

Although Lionel Messi is yet to make a real impact on this PSG outfit, they have still won all six of their games to this point. That has probably been helped by the fact that four of those teams are currently in the bottom half of the table, although it’s only going to get easier on Wednesday against rock-bottom Metz.

The hosts are currently propping up the table on just three points after six games and coming into this off the back of 2-0 and 3-0 defeats to Auxerre and Strasbourg respectively, we don’t give them much hope.

The Parisians have won the last 11 meetings in all competitions between the two dating back to the start of 2008, as eight of those came by two or more goals, including the last two at this venue. Furthermore, they’ve now won 10 of the last 11 unbeaten trips to all teams, winning by more than a single strike in eight and that looks the most likely outcome in this top versus bottom of the league clash.

PREDICTION:

PSG -1 HANDICAP

Angers v Marseille

The other clear standout side in Ligue 1 alongside PSG is Marseille. They have won four of their five unbeaten outings to date, netting two or more goals in each game. That includes wins at Montpellier and Monaco, who were both hard to beat last term and we’d expect them to continue that good vein of form this week.

Angers are punching well above their weight at the minute up in fifth in the table, but a 4-1 defeat hosting Nantes last time out has left some cause for concern. In fact, they’ve now gone just W3-D2-L6 from their last 11 home matches, seeing more than two strikes in seven, and we feel they might struggle to contain this high-flying Marseille outfit.

With goals likely to be on the cards, we like the chances of Bamba Dieng to add to his three goals already this term. The forward is averaging 1.86 goals per 90 minutes and having also scored in his nine-minute cameo in a cup match too, he’ll be eager to continue his hot streak.

PREDICTION:

BAMBA DIENG TO SCORE ANYTIME
