Juve dropped further behind league leaders Inter Milan at the weekend having succumbed to a 3-1 defeat when visiting Lazio, with Juan Cuadrado’s sending off a turning point in that game.
Having already qualified as group winners, Maurizio Sarri will likely not field a full strength side when they make the trip to Leverkusen, so it’s no surprise that the Germans are favourites for this one.
The hosts lost their opening three games in this year’s competition, but back-to-back victories over Atletico and Lokomotiv Moscow has set up a grand-stand finish as they need to win here and hope Los Rojiblancos drop points hosting the Russians at the bottom of the group.
Peter Bosz’s side are in much better form than when these two last met and have now won five of their last six unbeaten games, scoring exactly twice in each of those victories as they beat the likes of Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Schalke.
The Old Lady were on a run of 13 victories from 14 matches but have now picked up just one point from their last two against Sassuolo and Lazio.
With this the first of four games they still have to play before the Christmas break, it’s the perfect opportunity for Maurizio Sarri to rest some key players, particularly star man Cristiano Ronaldo and Blaise Matuidi, who is a yellow card away from missing the first knockout game.
Leverkusen To Beat Juventus
Douglas Costa, Sami Khedira and Giorgio Chiellini remain out for the Italian giants; Rodrigo Bentancur, Aaron Ramsey remain doubts; Adrien Rabiot has only just returned from injury; while former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can isn’t even in the Champions League squad, so they’ll be short of options in the midfield.
With Kai Havertz returning from injury in recent weeks for Leverkusen, the middle of the park could be an area of focus for the hosts here.
What’s more, Italian sides have a relatively weak record when travelling to face German teams. Indeed, this decade the Italians are just W6-D5-L14 in such matches, while Leverkusen themselves have beaten Lazio and drawn with Roma during this time.
With that in mind, we’re happy to get behind the side with something to play for here, taking on a weaker than usual Juve outfit at a healthy odds-against price.
Top scorer Kevin Volland will likely return to the fold for the hosts having missed out in their 2-1 victory over Shalke at the weekend, though Lucas Alario did manage a brace in that victory.
With seven different goalscorers of their own from their last 11 strikes, as two of them were own goals, Bosz isn’t exactly short of forward options here.
Since there’s little reliance on a talisman in this side, all goalscorer markets look too short and we’re inclined to avoid them all.
