LEICESTER V NEWCASTLE ODDS HERE!

Recent Form

Leicester are back up to third as they appear the team most likely to break the stranglehold of the ‘Big Six’ this season. If they’re to do that, then home matches against the divisions’ strugglers are the kind of games they have to be winning.

Newcastle sit just outside the relegation zone at this early stage, just one point ahead of both Wolves and Villa, with their early season form not particularly encouraging.

Newcastle Woes

The Magpies are just W1-D3-L3 across all competitions this season and were booed off the pitch in their goalless stalemate hosting Brighton last weekend.

Even key defender Fabian Schar (who preserved the point with a sensational goal-line clearance) admitted that they were lucky not to lose the game.

On their travels, Newcastle may have produced a victory over Spurs, but they’ve also been thoroughly outclassed by both Norwich and Liverpool, though the latter is understandable.

Against Brighton, Newcastle tried to press high up the pitch, with Christian Atsu and Miguel Almiron joining Joelinton in trying to force their opponents into making mistakes and giving the ball away cheaply in dangerous areas.

However, they found the Seagulls just played the ball through them and Steve Bruce admitted afterwards that the tactic failed to pay off and wouldn’t be repeated.

Given Jamie Vardy’s pace, Newcastle are bound to sit deep to prevent the easy route in behind, though such a strategy will inevitably invite pressure and they’re going to find it hard to create chances of their own as a consequence.

Lack Of Goals

Newcastle have certainly struggled for output as they’ve bagged just four goals this term, which is the joint-worst in the division alongside Palace and Watford. Summer signing Joelinton was hardly prolific at any of his previous clubs and has already missed a whole host of chances this term, particularly with his head.

However, Andy Carroll is fit enough to feature from the bench though Newcastle’s medical staff have claimed the Geordie won’t be able to actually start matches until the New Year owing to lingering problems with his ankle.

However, Steve Bruce has received a slight boost ahead of this clash as summer signing Allan Saint-Maximin trained without any problems on Wednesday, and could be eligible to make his return against the foxes this weekend.

Leicester To Win To Nil

Leicester won 4-0 midweek away at Luton, but while Newcastle weren’t in action having lost on penalties to their opponents here in the previous round of the League Cup, the Foxes shouldn’t be too tired from their excursions.

Brendan Rodgers used the opportunity against struggling Championship opponents to rest the likes of Jamie Vardy and James Maddison amongst other first team regulars, so the midweek victory should act as little more than a confidence boost in the context of this fixture.

Maddison may possibly miss this clash through injury, but while that could limit Leicester’s creativity, the hosts should have more than enough for their visitors having gone W6-D2-L1 at the King Power since the departure of Claude Puel as they haven’t conceded more than once.

Given Newcastle’s struggles at the sharp end, we’d back the Foxes to win to nil.
