Real Sociedad v Mallorca
Real Sociedad have the opportunity to go three points clear at the top of the table with both Madrid clubs’ games postponed this weekend. After a 4-2 defeat away to Barcelona on the opening day, the Basque side have gone unbeaten in their nine outings since across the league and Europa League, albeit with four draws in their last six games.
When restricting their record to home league games though, they’ve been far more impressive, winning six of their last seven such outings going back to April, while their only home league defeats in the last year have come against Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Sevilla, so they’ll be confident of seeing off this Mallorca side.
The Balearic side picked up seven points from nine to open their campaign on the front foot, though they’ve gone of the boil slightly since and have managed just four from the last 15 on offer. All three of their victories so far have come against sides currently below their position of 12th, with two of those sides in the relegation zone as things stand so they’ll have a real task to get one over Sociedad on the road this weekend.
Mallorca have lost all five of their away matches against sides in the top-six at the time of playing since the beginning of the 2019/20 season, conceding 18 times across those outings, with each coming by at least two clear goals so the handicap on the home win looks a good bet.
PREDICTION:
REAL SOCIEDAD -1 HANDICAP
Barcelona v Valencia
Barca have a torrid time of it of late, though with no side seemingly taking the league into their own hands, they have the chance to close the gap on Atletico and Real to just two points this weekend. That ‘s easier said than done having lost two games to nil on the bounce for the first time since Liverpool put four on them in the Champions League at Anfield over two years ago.
Valencia are no pushover either and currently sit above the Catalans in the table, albeit having played a game more. It’s long been the case that there’s a stark difference in Los Murcielagos’ form at home and on the road. Indeed, they’ve gone just W3-D10-L20 away from home since the beginning of 2020 and haven’t won this fixture for any of the past five seasons.
A draw isn’t incomprehensible here though, considering the form of both sides and the fact that this has ended all square in two of the last three seasons. Both sides are low on confidence, and we’d expect a low scoring and tight game considering, so the draw looks the way to go.
PREDICTION:
BARCELONA AND VALENCIA TO DRAW
Celta Vigo v Sevilla
It looks as though Celta will be fighting another relegation battle this year as they’ve won just two of their seven outings so far, with both those victories coming against sides below their humble position of 16th. They’ve now lost four of their last five home outings, and although their most recent was a victory, a last gasp winner from Dennis Suarez over Granada isn’t as convincing as they would have liked to be heading into this.
Sevilla sit just three points off the top, and can finish the weekend level on points with Atletico and Real with victory here. That said, they’ve managed just two wins from their last seven in all competitions, while away from home they leaves a lot to be desired. Indeed, they’ve won just one of their last seven road trips, with that coming as a narrow 1-0 win over bottom of the league Getafe earlier this season via a last-minute Eric Lamela effort. They can’t afford to rely on that late goal every game, and have now not won an away game by more than a single strike since February, being unable to cover that -1 handicap in any of their last 14 away games, so we’ll get the hosts onside that way.
PREDICTION:
CELTA VIGO +1 HANDICAP
