Andy Ruiz is an unlikely heavyweight champion. Contrast his plump physique with the heavily muscled build of Anthony Joshua.
The Briton looks every inch a world champion, but it’s Ruiz who holds the WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles. He ripped those belts from Joshua on a momentous night in June of this year. Ruiz wasn’t meant to be the champion, he wasn’t even meant to be Anthony Joshua’s opponent.
But when original choice Jarrell Miller failed drug tests, Ruiz stepped in a few weeks in advance. He had recently fought and, despite appearances, he was in shape and upset minded.
His left hook caught Joshua, hurting him badly and Ruiz eventually forced a stoppage inside seven rounds. The biggest upset of the year sets up the biggest fight of the year.
With Saudi Arabia a controversial choice for host nation, the two will box their rematch at a custom built 15,000 seat arena in Diriyah.

Was it a lucky punch that undid Joshua, a “punch from the gods” as has been claimed? If it was then Joshua simply has to be more wary. If he knocks Ruiz down, as he did in their first fight, with added focus he might indeed be able to find a finish a second time around.
But, Ruiz might just have the wrong style of fighting for Joshua. He showed he was durable enough to regain his footing after a heavy knockdown and go on the offensive.
His hands were quick and Ruiz was particularly effective with hooks up close. He got inside and backed Joshua up.
By taking an immediate rematch, Joshua has only given himself one training camp to adapt. That might not be enough. Boxers who win by a knockout in a first fight often repeat the feat in the rematch.

However, the truth probably lies somewhere in-between. The “punch from the gods” was not a fluke. Ruiz had a game plan and executed it well.
But that doesn’t guarantee him another victory. Joshua has significant tools at his disposal, both in height, reach and power.
He needs to retain exceptional composure but he can keep Ruiz on the outside with long, aggressive punching.
He doesn’t need to retreat on the backfoot, but he does need to keep moving round his opponent and resist being lured into dangerous exchanges at close range.
An Anthony Joshua points victory is a likely outcome, though this rematch might not come with the same level of drama as their first encounter.
