Repeat Or Revenge
This fixture comes a week after the Irish managed to win in Cardiff against Wales for this first time since their warm-up game there for the 2015 World Cup.
However, a similar fixture list is in place this year as it was four years ago, with Warren Gatland’s men now heading to Dublin to try and regain the bragging rights.
In fact, the visitors did exactly that and won at the Aviva Stadium back then, which they’ll be desperate to repeat.
Big Guns Return For Ireland
Joe Schmidt has gone all guns blazing with his selection though, with his side very much needing some confidence to take to Japan following a humiliation at Twickenham a fortnight ago.
You could argue Peter O’Mahony, Jacob Stockdale and Iain Henderson would make them look stronger, but it’s the Conor Murray and Jonny Sexton half-back combination starting for the first time this warm-up schedule that makes them look dangerous.
Mixed Selection From Gatland
It is a strong selection from Wales, but not quite to extent that their hosts have gone for, as British & Irish Lions Ken Owens, Dan Biggar and Liam Williams are all occupying their bench.
That does though leave some huge opportunities for the likes of Rhys Patchell, Leigh Halfpenny, Josh Adams and Tomos Williams in the backs to stake claims for a starting spot, while in the forwards the Kiwi coach has also given Elliott Dee, Jake Ball and Aaron Wainwright opportunities.
First Half Winner
There has been nothing to separate the two sides across their seven meetings in Ireland since 2008, with each of them going W3-D1-L3. However, at all venues the Welsh have the slight edge having gone W7-D1-L5 in more recent times since 2011, with three of those five defeats coming by fewer than 11 points.
Moreover, Ireland have only twice secured victory by more than 12 points from their 11 matches since mid-November, with those coming against weaker sides in USA and Italy.
Ireland Winning Margin
Another market we like is for Schmidt’s men to get off to another flying start. Indeed, they went in at the break 13 points up last week, while only twice from their 30 matches at the Aviva Stadium have they been losing at the break since the start of the 2014 Six Nations, as well as none of their 11 meetings with Wales here since 2002.
