IRELAND V RUSSIA ODDS HERE!

Japan Blow Pool A Wide Open

Japan provided the first major upset of the tournament when they overcame an Ireland side who were ranked the best team in the world not two weeks ago, mirroring their triumph at this stage of the 2015 World Cup over South Africa.

The result leaves pool A wide open with Scotland, Japan and Ireland all with a real possibility of qualifying from this group, though this encounter with Russia should prove to be all too straightforward for the men in green.

Ireland Looking For A Bonus Point Win

Joe Schmidt’s men will be disheartened to say the very least after their last result, but with the knowledge that Scotland and Japan still have to play each other, a victory here should see them take a huge leap toward qualification, and the Russians should provide very little in terms of resistance to that.

Ireland will be looking for bonus point victories in their next two outings, and we expect them to put the Cherry Blossoms match out of their mind and get back to winning ways in style against a notably weaker Russia outfit.

However, the handicap market does seem to flatter the Irish slightly. Only six times from their 227 matches since 2000 have they won by greater than a 50-point margin, which drops to one from 118 this decade.

Russia are an extremely large side and will undoubtedly look to combat Ireland with physicality and although it shouldn’t be enough to topple Schmidt’s men, it could cause them problems at times.

What’s more, the Bears have only lost by more than that 50-point margin on three occasions from their 108 Tests this decade, whic
h adds further weight to this argument.

Russia +52 Handicap

Captain Rory Best, Cian Healy, James Ryan, Josh van der Flier and Conor Murray are all rested from the defeat to Japan last Saturday.

However, with the likes of Bundee Aki and Johnny Sexton returning to the fray they’ll be a lot stronger in the backline.

However, as has been the case for so long now with Ireland, without either Murray or Sexton featuring at half backs this side struggles to tick, and that’s even been the case against the weaker Tier 2 & 3 sides, having never manged to win by more than 50 points from their 15 such encounters since November 2009 when the fly-half made his debut.

Russia +52 Handicap At 19/20
