Recent Form
Milan have dropped points in their past two games as they suffered defeat to Spezia and drew with Juventus, leaving Inter four points clear at the top, with Napoli tied on points with Stefano Pioli’s side.
The designated visitors can’t afford another slip-up here if they want to maintain their title ambitions, but it’s understandable that Inter enter this clash as heavy favourites.
Milan have taken just the single victory in the head-to-heads since 2016/17 (W1-D4-L7). That did come in this fixture last term and the Rossoneri have certainly improved over the past couple of years, but it’s still a desperately poor record.
There are however an even W1-D3-L1 against the rest of the top five in the table this season, with none of these games settled one way or the other by more than a single goal, so they should at least make Inter work for the derby spoils.
Inter have certainly been the most consistent team in the division with just a single defeat to their name this season, enjoying a current 14-match unbeaten run as they’ve won nine of the past 10.
They’ve also enjoyed cup success as they made it through their Champions League group and more recently, they downed both Juventus and Empoli in extra time in the Super Cup and Coppa Italia respectively.
Inter Milan And AC Milan To Draw
The Nerazzurri haven’t been quite so dominant against the top sides however. Including that recent Super Cup win over Juventus where Alexis Sanchez netted in the 121st minute, Simone Inzaghi’s side have drawn five of six clashes with the rest of the top five in the table this season, as the sole victory was a narrow 3-2 success over Napoli.
Inter only have injuries to new signing Robin Gosens and back up striker Joaquin Correa, whereas Milan are without Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ante Rebic in attack, as well as Fikayo Tomori at the back.
However, Pioli does have his midfield strengthened with both Frank Kessie and Ismael Bennacer returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, so has a strong trio to call upon along with Sandro Tonali.
Neither side are likely to go full guns blazing here. Milan will be conscious that any error could end their title hopes, while a point for Inter would represent a decent result to keep their city rivals at arm’s length.
Given the number of stalemates these sides have had when facing the best teams domestically, another draw would come as no surprise.
