The opening game of the 2019/20 Champions Cup gets underway this Friday as Toulouse head to Kingsholm. It’s a crucial game for Gloucester following their poor show in the competition last year, while the rest of the group consists of Connacht and Montpellier, so there’s unlikely to be an easy match.
Stade Toulousain have had a disrupted start to their season as they currently sit down in eighth place in the French Top 14, having gone W4-L5 from their nine matches.
Indeed, it’s their performances on the road that have let them down, losing each of their five trips to all of Bordeaux, Lyon, La Rochelle, Brive and Montpellier, and a trip to the west country is hardly going to be any easier.
The hosts currently sit in fourth place (after point deductions) in the English Premiership with 10 points from their opening four outings, as their defeats have come at home to Saracens and on the road at Leicester.
The former outfit has proven their dominance in both England and Europe down the years so it’s hardly surprising they came out on top, even if they are in a current crisis following their salary breach.
Gloucester Home Form
At Kingsholm, Gloucester have won an impressive nine of their 13 matches dating back to October last year when they beat the last French outfit to visit here, Castres, 19-14 as it’s become a fortress in recent times.
In fact, that home record includes six wins from their last seven outings since February, as they’ve overcome both giants of the game Exeter and Saracens, as well as west country rivals Bath and Wasps (twice) in that run.
Gloucester To Win
Although the Red and Blacks made it as far as the semis in this tournament last year, they were fortunate to be put in a group with weaker English sides Bath and Wasps who finished three and five places below the Cherry and Whites in the Premiership last term respectively, while their solitary tough trip at that stage of the competition saw them get brushed aside 29-13 by Leinster.
Moreover, it’s clear to see they certainly aren’t at the same level they were last term, having already lost more French Top 14 matches this campaign than they did across the whole of the last when winning it.
Considering all of that, we’re a little surprised to see the French side priced up as the favourites for this one, not to mention they’ll also be without their World Cup winner Cheslin Kolbe.
Of course, Willi Heinz is also a big loss for the hosts, but with both Callum Braley and Joe Simpson filling his void, it’s hardly going to rock the ship.
