The Germans have left themselves in a commanding position after they beat Portugal 4-2 to get back on track in Group F.
Their opponents took the lead through Cristiano Ronaldo in the 15th minute, but goals from Kai Havertz and Robin Gosens, as well as two own goals, helped them on their way to pick up their first points of the tournament and now up against a winless Hungary outfit, they’ll fancy their chances.
The luck of the draw hasn’t been there for Adam Szalai’s side, facing three top quality outfits. Although on just one point, they certainly aren’t a poor team as they proved when holding tournament favourites France to a stalemate at the weekend, but without Dominik Szoboszlai they do lack a bit of penetration.
They’ve gone W7-D5-L1 since October last year, as that sole defeat came against Portugal, but they’ve faced some much easier outfits over that period than what they’ll be up against this week.
Die Mannschaft may have had some turbulent results over the last few seasons, but they’re still a respectable W34-D15-L10 since crashing out at the semi-final stage of this tournament back in 2016.
The majority of those defeats came against top class opposition in Brazil, Mexico, Austria and Spain, as well as Netherlands and France twice.
The two unusual ones were South Korea when crashing out in the group stages of the World Cup and North Macedonia outfit just three months ago.
However, those defeats are certainly a minority and they have proved their class when winning last time out against the fifth best team in the world, while their game with Les Bleus was only separated by an own goal.
Germany To Win And Over 2.5 Goals
It’s difficult to get too excited about the underdogs. They’ve lost 17 of their 22 fixtures with the current top 16 in the FIFA World Rankings dating back to November 2009, including defeats in 10 of their 11 winless trips.
All those trips to opposition threw up some goals, as 10 of those saw more than two goals at an average of precisely five goals per game and we wouldn’t be surprised if this one followed suit.
The home advantage will be huge for the Germans and although a win might not be a necessity, they won’t want to take the risk. Only four teams have netted more than their four goals so far and seeing as seven of their last nine matches in qualification and tournaments have more than two goals, that looks the way to go again.
Robin Gosens To Score Anytime
On the theme of goals, no German player has had more shots on target than Robin Gosens so far this competition.
He’s their joint top scorer and although he doesn’t fill the usual goalscoring positions, he still looks too long in the market with nine of his teammates ahead of him in the betting.
