After winning just one of Martin O’Neill’s final 11 games at the helm and failing to score in six of these, Ireland have since won four of six unbeaten matches under Mick McCarthy, rising to the top of Group D as a consequence.
The two stalemates came against by far the best teams they’ve faced in the shape of main group rivals Denmark and Switzerland, while last time out they managed a 3-1 friendly win over Bulgaria with a second string side, which was the first time they’d netted three goals during a single game in over two years since they put three on Uruguay back in June 2017.
Georgia experienced some great form in 2018, going W8-D1-L1, but 2019 hasn’t been so kind as they’ve gone just W1-D2-L3, with the sole victory at home to Gibraltar and one of the defeats coming by a 5-1 scoreline away in Copenhagen.
However, having only lost 1-0 in the reverse fixture in Dublin, as well as holding both South Korea and Denmark to stalemates during the last international break in September, they’ll mount a challenge and the Irish can’t afford to take anything for granted in Tbilisi.

These two sides should be fairly familiar to one another having also been paired in the qualifiers for both Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup. Georgia finished fifth out of six on both occasions, while they also sit fourth out of five in the current campaign as they’ve remained fairly consistent.
Ireland have won four of the five head-to-heads over this period so far, drawing the other, though each victory came by a single strike as three finished 1-0 and a similar outcome should prevail here.

When looking back over these recent qualification campaigns involving both Ireland and Georgia in the same group, the narrow margin appeals even more.
Excluding the hosts’ results against Germany, Poland and Denmark – the best teams they’ve faced – they’ve gone down by the solitary strike in eight of their 10 defeats over this period, with six of these finishing 1-0.

Four of Ireland’s seven wins over the past two years have also come by a one-goal margin, with two of the exceptions in 2-0 victories over minnows Moldova and Gibraltar.
Those two sides were 156th and 195th respectively according to FIFA’s world rankings at the time of those matches, compared with Georgia, who currently sit at 91st.
Meanwhile, the other victory was that 3-1 success over Bulgaria last time out, which would have finished 2-1 if not for a late James Collins effort.
We’re inclined to think that the visitors will struggle to net too many given the lack of goalscorers in the squad, with Shane Long overlooked once again.
Of those selected, James McClean is the top scorer with 10 goals from 69 caps, but no one else has scored more than two for the national side as the Stoke winger accounts for 50% of the squads’ combined output.
