Recent Form

The Premier League leaders Liverpool travel to Belgium to take on a talented Genk side, who are struggling to find their feet domestically and sit in sixth place as they look to defend their fourth Belgian Pro League title, but are currently 10 points off the pace setters Club Brugge.

Liverpool dropped their first points of the campaign when they visited Old Trafford on Sunday, and required a late Adam Lallana tap in to share the spoils.

Despite the mixed return of results in the league (W5-D1-L4), Genk’s home record is impressive. Indeed, they have lost just one of their seven home matches this year including the Belgian Super Cup final, winning five and playing out a 0-0 draw with Napoli in their last outing in this competition, so are capable of putting on a performance.

Jurgen Klopp’s men, although still picking up the points, haven’t been playing with the joie de vivre we’ve come to expect from them in recent weeks. After losing the second half at Stamford Bridge, they required a goalkeeping howler and a soft last-minute penalty to get past Sheffield United and Leicester respectively, while they played out a 1-1 draw with an underperforming Man Utd side, so results may be papering over some cracks.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer showed how teams can counteract Liverpool, by exploiting spaces in behind their advancing full backs, and giving their midfield minimal time on the ball to create anything for their dynamic front three.

Genk And Liverpool To Draw

Genk tend to favour a 4-2-3-1 formation in this competition, which will allow for Theo Bongonda and Junya Ito to exploit the spaces Marcus Rashford and Daniel James did so well for United at the weekend, while the ever-present Sander Berge could announce his name on the big stage in a game like this.

What’s more, although they’ve only won one of their last 12 games in this competition (including qualifiers and playoffs) since 2011/12, there is again a stark contrast between their home and away form as they tend to grind out results against some of the bigger clubs.

They are W1-D5 in their last six Champions League home games, which is extremely impressive considering four of those draws have come against Chelsea, Napoli, Valencia and Leverkusen.

Under 2.5 Goals

A game at Anfield would warrant a different prediction, as the Belgian side have lost their last four away clashes in this tournament by an aggregate score of a whopping 20 goals to two, though they tend to keep it much tighter at Luminus Arena, and with Mo Salah still a doubt for this clash, Liverpool’s potential output could take another serious hit like it did at Old Trafford on Sunday.

With each of Genk’s last five home games in the Champions League ending either 0-0 or 1-1, it wouldn’t be too much of a shock to see it happen again.

Liverpool have seen ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ in four of their last five away fixtures in all competitions too, as only Chelsea were could buckle that trend and so we’re inclined to back a European upset at the prices.

Draw At 11/2

Under 2.5 Goals At 2/1
