Recent Form

The 22-time Turkish Super Lig Champions Galatasaray host Spanish giants Real Madrid in the third round of fixtures in Group A.

Surprisingly, they sit one place above Real in the Group with Zinedine Zidane’s men yet to win a game and anything but a win here will seriously dampen the 13-time European Cup champions’ chances of progression.

The Turkish outfit have not been convincing so far this season though, as a close run 3-2 home victory hosting Sivasspor on Friday helped leapfrog their opponents into only 5th after they’d experienced three successive league draws prior to last weekend.

The visitors haven’t exactly experienced better fortunes domestically, winning just half of their last eight in the league, culminating in a dire 1-0 defeat to newly promoted Mallorca last time out, so this shouldn’t be a clear cut as some may think.

On Champions League form alone, this would be a shoe in for the Spaniards. Galatasaray have won just two of their last 22 clashes in this competition since their Last-16 tie with Chelsea back in 2013/14, while they’ve gone D1-L10 in this period against sides of Real’s calibre in Atletico Madrid, Porto, Chelsea, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and PSG, while they’ve also lost 11 of their last 15 games against Spanish opposition.

Los Blancos have won four of the last six Champions League’s and are giants of the continental stage, having beaten the likes of Liverpool, Bayern Munich, PSG, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Roma and Ajax over the course of their last 18 European games, though a closer look into more immediate form makes for slightly less pretty reading.

One win in their last five such outings, including a 3-0 defeat to PSG who were without their front three of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Edison Cavani, and a comeback from 2-0 down to draw at home with Club Brugge, coupled with thumpings by Ajax and CSKA Moscow in last season’s edition has led to unwanted pressure of Zizou and his squad.

Their away record leaves a lot to be desired, going W1-D2-L2 outside the Bernabeu in their last 5, and that should spark a glimmer of hope in the Istanbul faithful.

Injury Concerns For Real Madrid

The team news will be pivotal in this clash, as a catalogue of players are either absent or a doubt for this tie.

Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Nacho and Marco Asensio are all sidelined for the Spaniards, while Eden Hazard missed their trip to Mallorca at the weekend to be there for the birth of his child, though he is expected to return, as is Raphael Varane who sat out Saturday’s defeat, and summer signing Ferland Mendy could make his return.

Fatih Cengiz will likely be without striker Radamel Falcao, while Southampton loanee Mario Lemina is also likely to miss this clash through injury, so some makeshift teams are likely to be on display in the Turkish Capital.

Both Teams To Score, Over 3.5 Goals

There are cases to make for both sides walking away empty handed from this one, though goals could very much be on the cards here.

Madrid have been criticised for their defensive frailties, and looked to be shoring up at the back when they recorded three straight clean sheets last month, though they’ve conceded five in their last three in all competitions, while each of their last five European games have seen more than two goals.

What’s more, all four head-to-heads have seen ‘Overs’ too, with an average of five strikes per game across them, including both at this ground. With Madrid defensively unsound, and Galatasaray seemingly out of sorts on all fronts, both teams to score and Over 3.5 Goals market look great bets.

Over 3.5 Goals At 8/5

Both Teams To Score At 4/6
