Forest In Decent Form
Since an opening day defeat hosting WBA, Forest have gone unbeaten in five outings. They won three of these, including an impressive victory away at Fulham last time out, and appear in better shape than their visitors ahead of this clash.
Derby excelled in cup competitions under Frank Lampard last season, but both sides are under new management this term and the Rams have so far failed to live up to expectations, while Forest have early reasons for optimism.
Cocu Struggling To Make An Impact
It’s now three games without a win for Phillip Cocu and it’s hard to draw any conclusion other than that Derby will be weaker this season. Instrumental loan signings Fikayo Tomori, Harry Wilson and Mason Mount all departed this summer along with Lampard, but while Cocu has tried to make Derby pleasing on the eye, it’s backfired in recent outings as they’ve conceded five times within their last three outings.
The Rams weren’t exactly the best at keeping clean sheets on the road last term and over the past 12 months going back to the start of September, just five of their 31 away matches have seen them shut out their opponents.
Both Teams To Score
Forest should certainly fancy their chances of making it onto the scoresheet then, especially having found the net in all six outings so far in the new campaign. Meanwhile, Derby have broken through their opponents’ backline in five of six games, so we certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see goals in this encounter.
We say that despite some rather low-scoring head-to-heads in recent seasons, but we don’t expect that trend to continue with Sabri Lamouchi now leading Forest, compared to the rather more dour offerings served up by either Aitor Karanka or Martin O’Neill before him.
Forest To Win
Derby last beat Forest at the City Ground back in September 2012 and since then, Forest have won half of six unbeaten home games in this fixture. Home advantage was helpful to both sides last year as Derby and Forest would have finished 4th and 7th respectively in the Championship on home results alone, and just 9th and 12th on the road. With that in mind, Forest appear a good price to seal progress to the next round within 90 minutes.
