In the build up to Sunday’s game much has been made about the impact caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had on Manchester United during his short time in charge. A record of four wins out of four looks good on paper, but the Norwegian admits the trip to Wembley to face Spurs will be a test of how far his side have come this past month.
For Spurs, it’s another match in a congested fixture list as they remain competitive on four fronts. This game is bound to draw mixed emotions from the fans. A win will keep alive their outsiders chance of a first Premier League title, but a win will also enhance the standing of boss Mauricio Pochettino amongst the Old Trafford hierarchy.
A change of fortunes?
All the talk ahead of this fixture has been of the progress Manchester United are making under their caretaker boss. He’s got them playing the ‘United’ style of football and the players are in high spirits. That optimism isn’t enough to install the Reds as favourites for this one though, with United available at 5/2 to win at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
Spurs inflicted a 0-3 defeat of United In the reverse fixture earlier in the season. And while Spurs’ performances have been patchy, they’ve managed to stay in touching distance of the league leaders. The games are coming thick and fast for Poch and Spurs are the slight odds-on favourites at 11/10 for this one. The draw is available at 13/5.
The promise of goals
A look at recent results for both teams and there’s plenty to suggest there will be goals in this fixture. United have put away 14 league goals in their past four matches, while Spurs nabbed 15 over the same period. Odds of 6/4 for Over 3.5 goals scored seems like a decent shout, while odds of 16/5 for Over 4.5 goals scored might be of interest for an optimist.
The promise of goals looks even more certain with the attacking options on the field for both side. Spurs attacking quartet of Kane, Eriksen, Son and Ali is one of the most potent in the league. Those four players available at 17/20, 3/1, 12/5 and 8/5 respectively to score any time.
United’s forward players have rediscovered their scoring form. In Marcus Rashford, a 15/8 shot to score anytime, and Romelu Lukaku, also available at 15/8 to score anytime, they have two players who are very much back amongst the goals. Paul Pogba, much maligned under Mourinho, has turned his performances around is starting to look like the £89million player the fans hoped he would be. He’s a 13/5 shot to score anytime against Spurs this weekend.
