Favourites Chelsea looking to reach the final of the competition for second consecutive year, while Spurs look to end their ‘choke’ rep against United
Looking back to the Quarter-Final stage, most would say that the results went as expected - except for perhaps Southampton, owing to their recent bad run of form. Spurs and United managed to cruise to victory against Swansea and Brighton respectively, while Chelsea fans have Pedro to thank for a rare headed goal from the Spaniard in extra time, which helped to send them through against Leicester City.
For the third year in a row, it will be an all Premier League affair in the semi-final matches, showing once again the difference in class between all of the English leagues.
If Pochettino’s men were to progress to the final, they would be praying for Southampton to cause an upset, as the last time Spurs did manage to reach a cup final (back in 2015), they were beaten convincingly 2-0, by none other, than their London rivals Chelsea.
There isn’t a single UK football fan that wouldn’t want to see their team lift this prestigious trophy. Big game players are what every manager craves – those who step up for their club when it really matters. Here we’ve taken a look at a few of those players who could lead their side to victory this weekend.
Christian Eriksen
The sweet-footed centre mid has hit peak form towards the end of this season, scoring five in his last five matches, a stat any striker would be proud of. He has also managed a couple of assists in the same period, making him one the deadliest midfielders in English football right now. After a disappointing exit from Europe, you can back Eriksen to lead Spurs into the final here at 5/4.
Romelu Lukaku
In the space of just eight days, Manchester United went from winning away from home against the top side in the league, to losing against the bottom side at Old Trafford. Following an embarrassing defeat at home to West Brom, Jose Mourinho rung the changes midweek against Bournemouth. The changes had the desired effect as United comfortably beat the Cherries 2-0. One player likely to make the starting line-up this weekend is talisman Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian forward looked most likely to score against West Brom, with only an in-form Ben Foster preventing him from finding the net. Coming off the bench against Bournemouth, the 24-year-old took just eight minutes to get on the scoresheet. United to win and both teams to score is worth a look at 5/1.
Eden Hazard
The Belgian winger has scored some key goals of late, including one which helped his side to victory over their FA Cup opponents Southampton in the league last weekend. Hazard was quoted earlier in the week as saying that he cannot be compared to the all-time greats due to his inconsistency. Every team in the Premier League, however, knows that if he turns up he is more than capable of putting on a show and winning games single-handedly.
Dusan Tadic
A few seasons ago Tadic was one of the hottest prospects in the Premier League, and it seems the assist king is starting to show off some of his old magic once again. He has managed to score two in his last eight, which is a decent return given his team’s recent run of form.
Luckily, this tie has goals written all over it – with 12 goals having been scored the last three times these two sides have met. With the magic of the cup, an upset is always possible. Get Southampton to reach the final here at 11/2.
