Everton will be beginning a new era at Goodison Park as Rafael Benitez takes charge of his first match against Southampton on the opening weekend.
It’ll be a big task ahead of him as the Toffees only just missed out on European football after a multitude of signings last term, while this time around they’ve spent a grand total of £1.8 million on new summer signings so far.
Southampton briefly sat at the top of the Premier League table last November but they didn’t last there for long. They finished up in a relegation battle towards the end of the campaign and having lost their star man up top in the shape of Danny Ings, you’d have to be slightly concerned about their chances.
They have brought Theo Walcott to the south coast, alongside Blackburn’s Adam Armstrong and Romain Perraud to replace the departure of Ryan Bertrand at left back.
All in all, there is no denying it has been a net loss in terms of quality that Ralph Hasenhuttl has to work with, but he will hope that Oriol Romeu can remain on the pitch this year and bolster the midfield.
Everton To Win And Under 2.5 Goals
We’d expect this encounter to be more of a low scoring encounter given that is the nature of both the managers.
In fact, all three head-to-heads have seen a maximum of two goals scored since the start of 2020, while at Goodison Park alone, four of the five meetings have seen fewer than three goals in all tournaments since 2017/18.
Moreover, the visitors haven’t won at this stadium this century, so we hardly expect that to change this weekend.
We’d therefore lean towards a home win in this one, as the Saints have lost 10 of their last 11 trips, only beating the worst team in the league last term, Sheffield Utd.
They only managed to score in four of those trips and the win to nil could certainly be an option too.
It’ll most likely be a slow start as both teams try to work one another out at the beginning of the season, while the hosts will still be learning their new managers’ ways.
In order to maximise the value, it could be worth coupling the home win with the goals market to get a bigger price, and that’ll be our only bet for this game.
