Everton’s 2-0 defeat hosting Sheffield United last weekend leaves them with three defeats from their past four league outings, as each of these came by a two-goal margin.
The latest defeat will have been the most concerning for Marco Silva (who the bookies have as the clear frontrunner to get sacked) as the Toffees have typically produced much stronger performances at Goodison Park for a number of years now, especially demonstrating consistency against the weaker outfits.
They even enjoyed wins over Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal here last term, as well as a draw in the Merseyside derby, though City were one of the teams to beat them and Spurs thrashed them 6-2.
Man City Recent Form
We’d be surprised on current form if City don’t get the upper hand again this time around. Marco Silva has encountered Pep Guardiola seven times in his managerial career to date, losing each of these clashes by at least a two-goal margin, as the only occasion where one of his teams conceded fewer than three came in a 2-0 defeat in this fixture last term.
The visitors also arrive in scintillating form on the back of their 8-0 annihilation of Watford last weekend. They may have a good recent history of tanking the Hornets, winning by at least five goals in four of the past seven meetings, but Guardiola’s men have now won by a minimum of three clear strikes in four of their last five matches in all competitions as they kept a clean sheet in each of those wins.
That would suggest that their absentees at centre-back aren’t causing quite as many problems as the 3-2 defeat to Norwich threatened. Indeed, Fernandinho has looked assured in the role in his two appearances alongside Nicolas Otamendi since the debacle at Carrow Road.
Meanwhile, neither were utilized on Tuesday against Preston North End as Guardiola opted for a rookie partnership of teenagers Eric Garcia and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, though expect the senior players to return for this fixture.
Moreover, Everton’s options in the middle of the park are limited by the absence of Jean-Philippe Gbamin, while Andre Gomes remains an injury doubt.
The likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Fabian Delph are decent players, but Gbamin in particular is a loss as it was hoped he could fill the void left by the departure of defensive midfielder Idrissa Gueye to Paris St-Germain this summer.
Man City -1 Handicap
Everton have conceded at least twice in five of their last six outings across all competitions, as the exception came in cup action versus Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, so we’d expect City to match that tally at a minimum.
Given the Toffees have lost by at least two clear goals in each of the past three head-to-heads with City, while in the meeting prior to these three (1-1) Guardiola’s side were hampered by a red card just before half time for Kyle Walker, the visitors appear well placed to cover the handicap here.
