Chelsea lost their 100 percent record last week and will hope to end Liverpool’s winning run when they face off in the Premier League on Saturday evening (5.30pm). We look at some of the trends and odds available for the big clash…
CHELSEA v LIVERPOOL
Chelsea’s winning start to the season was halted by a stubborn West Ham side last weekend and their 0-0 draw looks somewhat better by the Hammers’ showing on Tuesday evening when they whipped Macclesfield Town 8-0 in the League Cup.
Chelsea also had a midweek League Cup win – heading to Anfield where two late goals saw the west London side run out 2-1 winners.
Chelsea have a decent record against Liverpool and while the dust has barely settled on that tie, they battle it out again in a tea-time crunch-time clash.
EdenHazard came off the bench to score a stunning winner against the Reds and now they have home comforts to enjoy, as Chelsea have lost only two of their last 18 fixtures at Stamfiord Bridge, winning 13 of them.
Liverpool are the only team in the EPL of Football League to have a 100 percent record and are looking to win their first seven games in the top flight for only the second time (the first was in 1990/91 – when they still had to play second fiddle to Arsenal, who won the title).
The only team to win their first seven games in the Premier League was…Chelsea (2005/06, when recording nine successive victories) and Liverpool’s last Premier League defeat came in May…against Chelsea. Since then, Jurgen Klopp’s team have scored 18 goals and conceded three in their seven subsequent EPL matches.
Chelsea have lost one of their last 14 Premier League matches home and away, winning nine of them and the Genting Casino football odds make the Blues 7/4 underdogs, with Liverpool, who have won just two of the last 15 meetings with Chelsea, the 7/5 favourites.
The Genting Casino online soccer odds have the draw at 5/2 and it is worth noting that four of the last eight league meetings were drawn. Seven of the last eight stalemates ended in a 1-1 scoreline and it is 11/2 that the EPL clash will end in a 1-1 draw.
GIROUD IS KLOPP KRYPTONITE
Some teams have trouble containing certain strikers. For example, Romelu Lukaku has scored 11 goals in 11 games against West Ham.
For Liverpool, Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud is fast becoming Kryptonite to the Kop and Klopp. For the France striker has scored five goals in the past six starts against the Reds and while he was substituted at West Ham last week, Giroud is still likely to be preferred to Alvaro Morata, so his Genting Casino first scorer odds of 11/2 may be tempting to some. Giroud, who has yet to score this season, is desperate for a goal and is 17/10 to score at any time.
Klopp has won just two of his last seven meetings with Chelsea and while they have made a decent start, they beat the likes of Brighton, Leicester and Tottenham by a one-goal margin and were fortunate to come back to beat PSG in the Champions League.
GAME OF TWO HALVES?
No side has scored more first-half goals than Liverpool in the Premier League this season (10) and they are the only side to yet concede in the first 45 minutes. They conceded at Leicester and at Tottenham, and their Genting Casino online soccer odds are 13/5 to keep a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge.
In contrast, seven of Chelsea’s 14 Premier League goals this season have been scored in the last 15 minutes, so the 28/1 odds for Liverpool to be leading at half-time with Chelsea leading at full-time might be a little generous.
One wonders if the Liverpool high-press and up-tempo style in the first half of games catches up with them after the interval.
Liverpool’s midfield is arguably stronger with Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Gini Wijnaldum offering better balance than Chelsea’s midfield, which has seen N’Golo Kante undertake more of a box-to-box role this term, while summer signing Jorginho lying deeper. No player has picked more passes in the Premier League this season than the Brazilian, but Kante offers a better protective shield, so it is arguable that Chelsea are less equipped to deal with the pace of Sadio Mane and guile of Mohamed Salah.
The Blues’ midfield, with loan-signing Mateo Kovacic, has not yet bedded in sufficiently and it will be a surprise to layers if Chelsea build on their statistic of four wins in the last 11 league meetings with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.
MORE TOP TRENDS
Both sides scored in 14 of the last 17 meetings. Chelsea to win and both teams score is 7/2.
Liverpool won 2 of the last 15 meetings. Chelsea to win or draw is on offer at 8/15.
Liverpool have won only one of their last eight away Premier League games against fellow ‘big six’ opponents (D3 L4). Liverpool to win 2-1 is 17/2.
Chelsea#s Eden Hazard has scored four goals in his last two EPL games. Hazard is 6/4 to score at any time and 9/2 to be first scorer.
