Recent Head-To-Head Series
England haven’t won any of the last four series meetings with Pakistan, losing twice in the UAE and drawing both the 2016 and 2018 series on home soil, so this is by no means a forgone conclusion.
The hosts did come up trumps at Old Trafford back in 2016, winning by 330 runs, while they’re also coming off back to back wins against the West Indies on this ground so they certainly have the momentum in their favour.
Top Pakistan Run Scorer: Babar Azam
Babar Azam is creeping up the ICC Test rankings and now sits in sixth. His average of 64.9 over the last two years is only bettered by Steve smith’s 71 for players with more than 1000 runs in that spell, and if he can stay in for a considerable period like he tends to do, that will only serve to frustrate the hosts.
Furthermore, his solitary Test innings in England to date saw him score a 68 not out at Lords with the Duke ball and that will only do his chances more favours.
Azhar Ali will want to learn from Jason Holder’s mistakes and get his side in to bat first here, though even if that does boost their chances, we can’t see Chris Silverwood’s men losing out.
England To Beat Pakistan
The hosts have lost just once here since a defeat to Pakistan themselves in 2001, and morale will be extremely high in the camp with Stuart Broad becoming the seventh player to take 500 Test wickets at this level of the game, while he also formed a formidable partnership with Jimmy Anderson in the last series, so we feel they’re the deserved strong favourites for this clash, though there may well be some ebbs and flows throughout.
