Having completed a comfortable 2-0 series victory over Sri Lanka, it’s now Pakistan’s go to have a crack at this England side, with the first of a three match ODI series getting underway in Wales this Thursday.
While England will take confidence from their series win (which would likely have been 3-0 had rain not intervened in the final match) it can’t be said that it wasn’t expected, though this match will be entirely different.
With seven members of the England squad testing positive for COVID (three players and four staff), the ECB have selected an entirely new squad for this series, with Ben Stokes named captain.
Nine uncapped players have entered the new 18-man squad, and while it’s likely that the majority of them won’t manage to get a game, the inexperience in this squad will likely negatively impact the team throughout the series.
Pakistan To Beat England
Pakistan haven’t lost an ODI series since they last visited England in 2019, losing 4-0 in that five match series, though they’ve won all three series since, notably winning 2-1 away in South Africa in April.
That win will certainly give them confidence here, with the likes of Baba Azam and Fakhar Zaman ready to take it to this inexperienced side.
What’s more, Pakistan’s bowling attack has improved dramatically since they last toured England, and it’s difficult to see how throwing a side out last minute with next to no preparation is going to cope with the visitors here, so with nothing separating them in the market, the value is undoubtedly with Pakistan.
The visitors have won each of their last three ODIs here at Sophia Gardens, and when playing against England they’ve gone W2-D1 here, winning their last two in September 2016 and June 2017 and the most recent of those coming by a handsome eight wicket margin, so they certainly won’t be out of their depth here and are well worth getting behind.
