England will be looking to build momentum when they face USA on Friday who are yet to feature in this edition of the Webb Ellis Cup. Eddie Jones’ men will have a tough run after this encounter regardless of their route as they prepare to face a host of top tier one nations.
USA meanwhile, have been slowly building since the start of last year as they’ve put a decent run of results together and so you can’t just rule them out from the off.

They have only won four of 24 tests this decade against teams currently ranked above them, with three of these wins coming against tier two Georgia (twice) and Japan and have lost 11 of their 12 World Cup matches since 2007, only defeating Russia.
What’s more, the USA are one from 32 against top tier teams since 2000, so history is not on their side in this one, though the points handicap market looks to throw up some interesting prices.
Indeed, only 11 of those defeats were by more than 36 points, including four of their 16 meetings since 2009. Moreover, the Red Roses could only inflict a 28-10 scoreline on them at the World Cup in 2007 and so it looks a generous handicap line given the circumstances.
USA +36 Handicap
With some incredibly tough fixtures on the horizon for Jones’ men, they’ll no doubt be more cautious in the way they go about this game and will likely look to start strongly in the hope of making numerous second half changes to rest some of their key players.
With that in mind, we’re inclined to back the underdogs on the +36 point handicap, especially after Tonga pulled off that feat on Sunday.
Indeed, England have now only won by more than that points margin in 10 of their 24 clashes with sides outside of tier one this century, failing to do so in both such USA meetings.
