Final Preparations

This is the final bit of match preparation both teams will have before flying to Japan for the World Cup. This warm-up game will be England’s first ever at St James’ Park in Newcastle and interestingly, Eddie Jones has decided to go for a ‘mix and match’ centre partnership of Piers Francis and Joe Marchant.

The latter wasn’t even selected in the 31-man squad and leaves question marks over the fitness of both first choice outside centre options Henry Slade and Jonathan Joseph. Elsewhere, we see Billy Vunipola in the line-up for his fourth start of the campaign, while of the big guns, Owen Farrell starts for the first time this warm-up schedule and Anthony Watson moves to full back for the first time since March 2018.

Key Players Rested For Italy

It looks a rather strange setup for Italy as they have decided not to start any of Sergio Parisse, Leonardo Ghiraldini, Tommaso Allan or Matteo Minozzi. Instead, Conor O’Shea looks to be testing his squad and also resting those key figures for their first World Cup game against Namibia on 22nd September.

The Azzurri have had a fairly torrid time in the Six Nations so far as they’ve lost 87 of their 100 matches since they joined in 2000, including 47 of 50 on the road.

Indeed, that includes an average of over four tries conceded per game across those 50 trips, although only 11 of those were by more than the 33-point handicap they’ve been given for this one.

A slightly worrying factor for O’Shea though will be his side’s slump in form. They started promisingly under him with three wins from their opening four matches as they beat USA, Canada and South Africa, but they’ve since taken a serious turn for the worse and lost 27 of their last 31 outings, with their only victories coming over Fiji and Georgia at home and on the road in Japan.

Joe Marchant To Score Anytime

The Red Roses have been utterly dominant in this fixture on home turf over the years, averaging 5.6 tries per game this century from their 10 meetings, so they look a shoo-in to get the victory.

However, there isn’t much point in backing them in the outright and instead we fancy the tryscorer market, with the outside centre position taking our interest.

The England 13 has scored eight tries against Italy since 2015 from just four games and with Marchant at a fairly big price and likely to get a full 80 minutes, he looks a solid bet to touchdown for his first international try.
