Sunday’s thriller between Wales and Australia has left England fans scratching their heads over whether second place in Pool C may offer a more appealing route through the knockout stages, but rest assured Eddie Jones and his men will not let any thoughts of the kind enter the fray, and will be going all out as they prepare to face a string of Tier 1 nations in succession.
England come into this game after a mixed couple of years under Jones, going W11-D1-L8 against fellow Tier 1 nations since the beginning of 2018, having lost to all of Wales (2), South Africa (2), Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand and France, though they have won their last nine encounters with Argentina.
On the flip side, the Pumas victory over Tonga ended their run of nine straight defeats, though against Northern Hemisphere opposition their record is even worse.
With the exclusion of Italy, Argentina have lost all their last 15 matchups with Six Nations opposition dating back to June 2016, so we fully expect Eddie Jones’ men to extend that to 16 come Saturday.
Full Strength Teams Expected
England may be seen to have a little squad revamp, with talk of Mako Vunipola making an immediate return to the starting line up having only played 17 minutes of rugby in the last four months, though we don’t expect Aussie coach to overhaul his starting XV and we expect two near full strength sides going head-to-head in Tokyo.
England To Win By 1-12 Points
Since Jones took the reins, all four encounters with Argentina have seen his side win by fewer than 14 points, while all of Argentina’s last eight defeats have come by a margin of 15 points or fewer, so it looks a tasty proposition to back the Southern Hemisphere side with a points advantage.
In fact, at the World Cup alone the Pumas have only once lost by more than that margin from their 14 matches since 2011, as the All Blacks beat them 33-10 in their home country, but other than that all their other five defeats have been by fewer than 15 points, with four coming by fewer than 12.
Moreover, the Red Roses haven’t managed to beat a single Tier 1 side at this tournament by more than five points from their nine such matches since the start of the 2007 competition, and so the winning margin looks a solid bet as well.
