BOOSTED ODDS FOR THE EURO 2020 QUALIFIERS AVAILABLE HERE!
Recent Form
Steve Clarke’s men will be hoping to qualify for the Euros through the Nations League path having missed out on a top two spots in this group to runaway leaders Belgium and Russia. Cyprus currently lead Scotland by a point and although their hopes of qualifying are over, a positive result against the Scots would be huge for them, with a win ensuring they will finish the group in third.
A lot of questions have been raised over the British side’s quality, with them losing dismally to Kazakhstan 3-0 earlier in the group, while they didn’t exactly make light work of Cyprus, requiring an 89th minute winner from Oliver Burke to take the spoils in Clarke’s first game in charge.
Scotland’s woes have been on display far beyond these qualifiers however, as they hold just a 34% win record on the road in qualifiers since trying to make their way to the Euros in 2000, with each of their last six defeats coming to nil, and the last five leaking as many as 16 goals.
Cyprus, meanwhile, are a slightly better W3-D2-L4 in home qualifiers since September 2016, though seeing as each of those defeats came against Belgium (twice), Russia and Greece, they certainly hold some serious credibility when coming up against an out of sorts Scotland side.
The head-to-heads between the two are extremely one sided with the Scots taking six wins from six. However, four of these came before 1990, while their last two have both been by marginal 2-1 scorelines in 2011 and in the reverse fixture in this group back in June.
Cyprus To Win
With nothing to lose except pride for either team here, we’d expect goals to be on the cards. While the visitors possess quality around the pitch with the likes of Celtic duo James Forrest and Ryan Christie, they’ll have to do without Ryan Fraser, Scott McTominay and Liverpool’s attacking full-back Andy Robertson, which certainly reduces their chances.
Indeed, since September 2016 they’ve gone W12-D4-L8 of their 24 matches with their captain in the side, while in the six without him over this period, they’ve lost each of them to nil.
By contrast, the hosts have FC Copenhagen’s Pieros Sotiriou, who’s been clinical of late, scoring in two of his last three for Cyprus, as well as four from his last three on home turf.
He also has four from his last six appearances for his club at an average of a goal every 55 minutes, so he’ll provide a threat to any backline and we’ll have a little flutter on an upset occurring in this one.
