In just a few days’ time on Saturday, July 7th, over 170 cyclists will embark on their three week journeys, in search of Tour de France glory.
With four classifications up for grabs there is something for every rider to fight for, with key competitors Chris Froome, Tom Dumoulin and Richie Porte all seeking an overall general classification victory.
With the reigning champion’s anti-doping case being dropped earlier this week, it means the Team Sky rider is now free to express himself on the tour, without having to deal with constant criticism from both race organisers and fellow competitors.
And due to the four time champion’s sole focus now being on winning this year’s race, he is our favourite at 7/5 to do so.
When looking back to the 104th edition of the tour last year, Froome wasn’t the only Brit to enjoy success. Fellow team mate Geraint Thomas managed an opening stage win in the individual time trial, while Simon Yates managed to take home the young rider classification.
Simon Yates especially impressed at the Giro d’Italia a few months ago, making him one to watch at this year’s race.
Looking ahead to this year’s tour, it’s one that will be filled with challenges from the start, with one of the biggest being the devilish 21.7km cobble stretch in Roubaix. It doesn’t end there however with riders then having to tackle several unforgiving stages in the alps which include demanding summit finishes.
Even with the race taking place over a three-week period there are always favourites when it comes to cycling’s biggest event. So below we have examined three riders who have the ability to steal Froome’s glory.
Tom Dumoulin – Team Sunweb
The 27-year old has impressed over the past few years with his biggest victory coming at the Giro d’Italia in 2016. He has also managed two stage wins previously at the tour making it clear that he has the ability to push further.
One downside is that the Dutchman has never completed two grand tours in one season before, which is an obstacle he will have to overcome this time round if he is to have any chance of victory. Get him to prove himself and win the GC here at 11/1.
Adam Yates – Mitchelton-Scott
The 25-year old will take centre stage for his team at this year’s tour with team sprinter Caleb Ewan being left at home.
The Brit has an experienced team behind him to face the task at hand, and with high finishes through the year, including a 2nd place finish at the Criterium du Dauphine, he is certainly someone who could cause an upset at 18/1.
Vincenzo Nibali – Bahrain-Merida
Although recent performances haven’t been great by the Italian, you can never rule him out. He is one of seven to previously win all three grand tours and is someone who is capable of turning on the heat when it matters.
He has won five stages at the tour in his career and has looked impressive in each of those. Get him to win here at 9/1.
