Recent Form
Tottenham rallied late on with goals from Steven Bergwijn in the 95th and 97th minutes to beat Leicester 3-2, maintaining Antonio Conte’s unbeaten record at the club in league action.
They’ve won six of nine games so far, though it’s fair to say they’ve enjoyed a kind run of fixtures. Aside from the meeting with 10th-placed Leicester, they’ve only had one other clash with a top-half side as they played out a 2-2 thriller when hosting Liverpool.
However, it’s worth noting that the Reds were without key centre-back Virgil van Dijk on that occasion, as well as a slew of midfielders including the likes of Fabinho, Thiago and Jordan Henderson, forcing Jurgen Klopp into handing youngster Tyler Morton a start at the base of midfield.
Recent clashes with Chelsea themselves are perhaps a better indicator of their prospects here, having being outclassed in both legs of their League Cup semi-final, going down 2-0 at Stamford Bridge and again failing to score as they lost 1-0 at home.
In fact, Chelsea have kept clean sheets in each of their past five meetings with Tottenham, winning all four since Thomas Tuchel arrived in the dugout.
The Blues have however seen their form tail off recently, taking just the single victory across their past seven league games (W1-D5-L1).
They’ve suffered in the absence of flying wing-backs Reece James and Ben Chillwell from injury, especially with Marcos Alonso one of those to experience a dip in form and Cesar Azpilicueta perhaps better suited to playing in a back three these days at 32-years-old.
Throw into the mix an ill-advised interview given by Romelu Lukaku, Edouard Mendy being away at the Africa Cup of Nations and an injury to exciting young centre-back Trevoh Chalobah, and the Blues have some issues to iron out in the short term.
Under 2.5 Goals
Excluding a comfortable FA Cup win over League One strugglers Morecambe, Tottenham have seen fewer than three goals in four of their last five appearances.
The exception was of course last time out, though Leicester have leaked goals left, right and centre this season and even an out-of-form Chelsea should be more miserly.
The principal difficulty the Blues have faced without James and Chillwell has been the quality of service going forwards, and ignoring their own easy FA Cup tie with Chesterfield, each of their past four outings have also witnessed a maximum of two goals.
That of course includes both recent meetings with Tottenham themselves, as well as a 1-0 defeat to another quality side as they went down 1-0 to Man City at the Etihad.
