Recent Form
Frank Lampard seems to have finally found a defensive line he can rely upon, with his side now not having conceded a goal for four matches now, and that’s thanks in part to new goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
The Senegalese has now kept five clean sheets since conceding one on his debut against Spurs in the Carabao Cup, and he’ll be returning to his former side here just over a month after he left.
A 4-0 win at Krasnodar was then followed up with another convincing 3-0 win away at Burnley in the Premier League as the Blues new look side shows signs of beginning to click, though despite a 1-1 draw between Rennes and Krasnodar, the French side should not be taken lightly.
While they’ve been a top half mainstay for much of the 21st century, their third placed finish last season was their highest in Ligue 1 history, and they’ve proved it was no fluke by sitting in third again this season just three points off leaders PSG.
However, they have slightly gone off the boil in recent weeks since the departure of Mendy and Rafinha to the Premier League. In fact, they’re 2-1 win over Brest at the weekend was their first in six matches in all competitions stretching back to the end of September.
On the surface their 1-0 defeat to Sevilla looked hard fought, though in truth the scoreline flattered the visitors on that occasion having conceded 23 shots in total across the 90, though that’s something of a theme for the French side.
Draw (Chelsea -1 Handicap)
Rennes very rarely get run over, and although Chelsea are the better side here, we wouldn’t expect it to be comfortable for the Blues.
Of the last 17 defeats their opponents have endured going back to April last year, only one has come by more than a single strike and although the Blues have won convincingly across their last two outings, inconsistency has been a staple of Frank Lampard’s time at the helm and with a side full of new personnel, there’s going to be times when it's not so straightforward.
The London side should control this game for the majority, though they may find it hard to be prolific, especially if the boss decides to rotate his starting 11 here and the one goal winning margin looks a good bet.
Draw (Chelsea -1 Handicap) At 13/5
