Recent Form
A dip in form from both of these sides has led to a three horse title race looking like it may not be a race at all, with Man City eight points clear of second place Chelsea after the blues were pinned back by a late Danny Welbeck header in their last outing against Brighton.
Across all competitions, Liverpool have now gone three games without a win in 90 minutes for the first time since April, and it doesn’t get much easier for them here. Their 1-0 defeat to Leicester last time out was the first time they’ve failed to score in the league since March when they suffered defeat to Fulham by the same scoreline.
The reverse fixture ended in a 1-1 draw at Anfield, though it was Chelsea that were the side on the front foot before Reece James was sent off in a double jeopardy incident in which Mo Salah converted from the spot, though the Blues held on relatively comfortably in the end and had chances to win the game themselves.
It will likely be a different story here though, and while the visitors have struggled for a couple of games now, Chelsea’s dip in form has been more substantial as they’ve now won just four of their last 10 matches. What’s more, up against top-half opposition at the time of playing, the Blues have really struggled throughout this season, winning just three of their eight such games, with all three of those wins coming away from home.
Chelsea And Liverpool To Draw
With that said, Liverpool have a poorer 30% win record against top-half sides this season, with their victories coming over Man United, Arsenal and Wolves. That leaves the 1x2 market very much in the balance here, and a draw looks incredibly plausible and could be worth getting behind at a long price.
Only Brighton (9) have drawn more games than Chelsea (6) and Liverpool (5) in the top half this season, with all three of those sides proving extremely difficult to beat this year (only Man City have lost fewer than those three).
The meetings have been extremely balanced since the beginning of last season, with a W1-D1-L1 record for both, despite Chelsea seeing red cards prior to the interval in two of those games.
Thomas Tuchel has faced Jurgen Klopp more times than any manager in his career and while Klopp has a superior W9-D4-L3 record, seven of those wins came when Klopp was in charge of a far superior Dortmund team to Tuchel’s Mainz, and in the six meetings since then, they have a balanced W2-D2-L2 record. There’s very little to split these two, and the draw looks a great price considering.
PREDICTION:
CHELSEA AND LIVERPOOL TO DRAW
