BARCELONA, CHELSEA AND MAN UNITED ALL TO WIN AT 13/2
Recent Form
A 4-0 win over Sevilla last week ensured top spot for Chelsea, which will allow Frank Lampard to make wholesale changes here and keep his star players fresh. He made a number of changes in the reverse fixture as they also won 4-0 away in Krasnodar, so he’ll have faith in his back-up players to go out there and make an impression.
Moreover, the Russian outfit have nothing to play for either, as with a better head-to-head record with rock-bottom Rennes, they are guaranteed third place and a spot in the Europa League knockouts.
Chelsea have some serious momentum behind them and are unbeaten in 13 outings across all competitions now, registering nine clean sheets in the process as signings Edouard Mendy, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell have made a real difference.
That trio should get the night off, amongst others, but this squad has some depth to it and a back four comprising of Emerson Palmieri, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta should be adequate for the task at hand.
Krasnodar may have put five past Rotor Volgograd at the weekend, but their opponents were already mired to the bottom of the Russian league table and at risk of being completely cut adrift.
It was just the second time in 11 appearances where they’d found the net more than once, and the first in six, so we’re not talking about a side in full flow.
Indeed, Krasnodar have lost seven of their past 10 outings and it’s hard to see them taking anything from Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea -1 Handicap
Chelsea’s win in the reverse fixture sparked an impressive run of eight victories from nine appearances, with the exception when stifled in a tight stalemate with Jose Mourinho’s table-topping Tottenham.
They scored twice at a minimum in each victory, winning by at least a two-goal margin on seven occasions, and by three or more in five of them.
Although Chelsea may well register another clean sheet here, we’d prefer to get behind them with a focus on their attacking impetus. Lampard’s fringe players are a little stronger in attack, where the likes of Olivier Giroud, Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi have all been itching for more minutes.
The French World Cup winner has been phenomenal in European competition for the Blues and has 16 goals since 2018/19, while excluding qualifiers only Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard have scored more for Chelsea on the continent. He’ll likely make way however after starting their last two games with Sevilla and Leeds, but whichever team Lampard selects it won’t be short on quality in the final third.
