Recent Form
Palace will be looking to bounce back from their defeat hosting Everton, where their opponents benefited from another controversial VAR handball decision, even if in truth the Toffees were the better team on the day.
The Eagles had enjoyed success on the road at Old Trafford in their previous game and with Chelsea similarly poor at the back, they’ll hope for another major scalp early in the season.
Whereas Roy Hodgson’s men have had the week off having already been ejected from the League Cup during the previous round, Chelsea faced a difficult assignment on Tuesday as they travelled to Spurs and went down on penalties.
That leaves them with little time to prepare for this clash and there should be plenty of changes to the starting line-up.
Ben Chillwell and Edouard Mendy made their debuts, though the former only lasted 66 minutes on his first start since returning from injury and Lampard will surely opt for either Marcos Alonso or Emerson here.
Reece James should come back in place of Cezar Azpilicueta on the other side, but the young Englishman is better going forwards and Chelsea could be exposed defensively.
Given one of Palace’s core strengths lie in their wide men, with the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Andros Townsend and summer signing Eberechi Eze in the squad, we’d expect them to target their hosts’ full-backs as an area of weakness.
Both Teams To Score
That leaves the both teams to score market looking very attractive, especially after the 3-3 draw Chelsea were held to by West Brom last week.
Marcos Alonso was at fault for two of the goals and in fact, so many individual mistakes leaves Chelsea with just nine clean sheets from 41 games since the start of last season now.
Both teams have scored in five of the last seven head to heads with Palace since 2017, though Chelsea came out on top in each of the past five and understandably start as favourites.
Still, Palace have started the season well and although they lack a clinical predator in the box, they are at least creating more chances this season. Their counter-attacking blueprint has on occasion been used to great effect when facing the top teams before, with the Eagles W4-D2-L7 away to top-six sides since 2018/19. Both teams found the net in over half these games. though we couldn’t get behind the visitors given their own injury concerns.
Centre-backs Scott Dann, Garry Cahill and James Tomkins are all unavailable, leaving midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate to fill in at the back.
Summer signing and right-back Nathan Ferguson is also missing, as is left-back Patrick van Aanholt, while left-sided player Jeffrey Schlupp is also a doubt.
Effectively, Palace are without their first choice back four, and Chelsea have plenty of firepower to offer even without injured duo Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech.
